With Sias Ebersohn leaving the Cheetahs at the end of the season to play for the Western Force Super Rugby team in 2013, the Bloemfontein outfit has lured Elgar Watts from the Boland Cavaliers.
The Volksblad reports that the Cheetahs have signed Watts as backup to Johan Goosen and Riaan Smit, the only two flyhalves in Bloemfontein ahead of what is sure to be another long Super Rugby season. On top of that, we already know that Goosen is injury prone, and with the young flyhalf being in the Springbok setup now, he will not have any rest from February through to August, and decent backup is required.
Watts has apparently been signed after an approach for Pumas flyhalf JC Roos was unsuccessful. According to backline coach Hawies Fourie, Watts is an attacking player that will suit the style of rugby the Cheetahs like to play.

Why would JC not be inclined to sign? One would think if an opportunity like this comes up for a player, they would take it up with both hands. Or do they reckon they stand a chance for promotion next season to the Currie Cup and he can play there?
Didn’t Watts play Prem. Div. rugby last year for the Leopards?
Surely they would try sign Willie Le Roux? He is actually a 10 isnt he? Watts is an ok backup though.
@SheldonK (Comment 3) : they don’t need to sign le Roux… he’s with Griquas, so already available to them for Super Rugby… and they’re paying half his salary there anyway
@TRF_Ezequiel (Comment 2) : who cares if he did… he’s in the first division now, baby 🙂
why sign Watts when you’ve got Brummer at Griquas? dom…
@Megatron (Comment 6) : Currie Cup back-up as Goosen will be with the Boks again next year.
@robdylan (Comment 4) : Does that mean Sias is back for Currie Cup? If so then Watts would surely be surplus to requirements in CC.
@SheldonK (Comment 8) : I think Sias is back for Currie Cup, isn’t he?
@robdylan (Comment 9) : after the falling out that happened i dont reckon sias wants to come back
@robdylan (Comment 9) : @Dunx (Comment 10) : I still think he is a really good player and as soon as he learns not to try to something amazing every time he touches the ball he will be a lot more composed and really start to make a difference. But i think a season up north is what he needs, and by north i dont mean Japan!
