The deserved winners of the Currie Cup coach and player of the month for September has been announced, with the Lions pair of Johan Ackermann and Elton Jantjies walking away with R10 000 each.
Jantjies and Ackermann have led the Lions to top spot on the Currie Cup log, while Jantjies is one of the leading points scorers in the competition, incredible if you consider he has missed a few weeks of action due to Springbok commitments.
Ackermann has steered his team to four wins from five matches in September, with the teamβs only loss in the month to Griquas at Ellis Park, whilst winning away matches at Loftus, Bloemfontein Stadium and Newlands.
We would like to congratulate both Johan and Elton on a successful month.

I think this is great considering they are out of the S15, it is a up yours to SARU, but they were basically a s15 side playing currie cup they should have done this regardless.
Lions problem is lack of leadership. I’ve watched some games that made me tear my hair out in frustration with some of the captaincy calls…
And October is Sharks month
Take it all the way boys and show SARU. We are getting players back from injury and showing what we can do
Have to say congrats to the Lions… this is definitely deserved
@robdylan (Comment 5) :
Very good month for the Lions, despite the loss at home, it could have been a nightmare with games away at Loftus, Newlands and Bloemfontein!!
If they beat Griquas this weekend, they will have beaten all teams away from home bar the Sharks..
Big congrats to the Lions. Ackermann was very proud when receiving his award, you can see it meant a lot to him.
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 6) : Assuming we don’t lose to griquas again….
I take a lot of pride from the fact that we’re the only side undefeated at home this season.
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 6) : Lions should also have lost to Sharks at home.
Hi guys I am a very big Lions supporter and have been following you guys for a long time and enjoy your Love for rugby very much…. Just one thing that puched me to actually register and start having a say. You guys ( DUNX ) keep saying that the LIONS team is basicly a S15 side playing CC. Well have you maby seen that the Lions has got 5 BOKKE and we were really strugling with injuries in the past 2 years and we still won the CC Last year and once again we are top of the Logg so just admit it that the LIONS are the inform side and we are doing a great job to take the youngsters trough the ranks and make them BOKKE. If we were a S15 side we would not have been religated and would have been there next year. Have any of you ever thought that maybe the LIONS has always been a CC team playing S15 and that is the reason they are strugling a bit in S15……
Just a thought for you guys…. Keep up the good work and thanks for all the good rugby knowledge shared on this site….
@Lassy_lion (Comment 10) :
ive given up with them regarding that π save your breath and focus on the nice bits they say π
@Lassy_lion (Comment 10) : welcome to the site, Lassy… I recognise your name from somewhere though.
I think you’re right… the Lions are probably not quite good enough as a Super Rugby side, but definitely a cut above at Currie Cup level.
robdylan Thanks and yes you might reconise me from Superbru have been taking part there the last 2 years. Ja we must just get a couple of expierienced players and we can make a big comeback in 2014. You know we had 10 injuries in this years S15 and that means 10 differant players than the ones winning the CC in 2011 if that had to happen to any other team they would struggle….
@Lassy_lion (Comment 10) : @Zibbie (Comment 11) : My goodness – you two paint in broad strokes, don’t you? π
