Who’s your Shark? Huh? Huh?

With Silly season in full-swing, Unions are buying, lending and signing left, right and centre. And with the Blue Bulls Union, apparently having an open cheque-book, one can understand us fans being somewhat nervous at this time of the year.

The Sharks have never been known to hang on to their young talent, and we seem to be losing very valuable ones, from time to time to other Unions.

This time around, however, I can reveal that The Sharks have done well to retain one of our Super Stars! And I am extremely relieved to say that for at least the next 3 years, I will be able to sleep rather well!

Marcell Coetzee has decided to stay with the Sharks and has signed another 3 year contract with the Union today! Coetzee will be ours until at least 2015!

From the bottom of my heart – Thank you, Sharks! Thank you, Agent! And thank you, Marcell!

Coetzee made his debut in Super Rugby for the Sharks against the Brumbies on Saturday 7 May 2011, one day before his 20th birthday. Since then, he has grown in leaps and bounds. Not only was he the best tackler in the 2012 Super Rugby competition, but he has also acquired some valuable skills in offloading and getting over the advantage line.

Currently with the Springbok squad, Marcell is playing a valuable part in our National side at the tender age of 21.  Heyneke Meyer, Springbok coach, included him in the national squad to face England in a test series where Coetzee made his Springbok test debut on 9 June 2012

From myself, all your fans and particularly Sharksworld – Congratulations and thanks for the rugby-watching pleasure you will give us for the years to come!

  • That’s damn good news, especially seeing as Marcell and his dad are Bulls supporters! Shows that if you grow a good atmosphere at a union, the players will respond positively and that loyalty can be more than a word.

  • @Amateur (Comment 28) : cool.

Look, I still don’t maintain that the Bulls are going about this the right way either. I think they are selling rainbows and unicorns to hundreds of players that are only going to end up disappointed at the end of the day. Like it or not, the Sharks have a far better record when it comes to identifying the really special kids and nurturing them all the way through the system to senior rugby.

The Bulls’ youth structure seem to be very hit and miss. Why else would they contract 80% of the last 3 year’s SA Schools centres, and then still buy both Johann Sadie and JJ Engelbrecht? And, if rumours are to be believed, are also after Mapoe and Taute?

  • @robdylan (Comment 29) : Yep. Difficult for me to comment. Their junior guys are also there for Tuks and their two Varsity cup sides U20 and Senior). Regarding the centers I dont think they will get Taute and I think JJ is now a wing.

  • Comment 30, posted at 05.10.12 13:00:51 by Amateur Reply

  • @Amateur (Comment 30) : I think JJ is starting at centre for them this evening… Actually wait… I don’t think that. I know that 🙂

  • Comment 32, posted at 05.10.12 13:15:37 by Amateur Reply

  • @Amateur (Comment 32) : I understand that you are looking at this from a completely different position to my own…

My position is that I see a Sharks Currie Cup team brimming with youngsters fresh from the Academy in second spot on the log.

Then I see a Bulls team, who contracts 3 times as many young players as the Sharks do, at the bottom of the log. I also see their team full of imports from other provinces.

    Something isn’t adding up here…
