Coach Heyneke Meyer might rue his decision to rush young Cheetahs flyhalf Johan Goosen into the Springbok fold, following news that Goosen has picked up a Grade 3 medial tear in his knee, and could be out for a lengthy amount of time.

Goosen, who sustained a shoulder injury during Super Rugby and was ruled out for 4 months, played 40 minutes of rugby before being called up to the Springbok squad to travel to Australia and New Zealand. He made his debut from the bench on this tour and subsequently selected to start the match against Australia at Loftus.

He picked up another injury during this match which prevented him from taking the kicks at goal, where Ruan Pienaar took over, but was cleared to start the match against the All Blacks a week later, in which he lasted only 30 odd minutes.

Goosen will hear today whether he requires surgery, which will rule him out of rugby for up to 6 months, or if surgery is not necessary, the young flyhalf will be out for 3 months, which would see him miss the End of Year Tour, but be back in time for the start of the 2013 Super Rugby campaign.

  • I was waiting for this to happen. Either to him or Vermeulen. And now I see Coetzee is keen to start all 7 of his boks. Someone is going to break down.

Here’s to hoping Plum leaves Jannie, Beast, Marcell and Alberts to their rest. They deserve it!

  • @PTAShark (Comment 1) : I agree. Only fringe players should be included like Mvovo and Burden. Pat also hasn’t had much gametime lately and should get a run at 10.

Vermeulen and De Jongh haven’t played much rugby either so can be included on the bench for WP.

  • I hope that Goosen’s injury doesn’t mean that we revert back to Morne Steyn for the end of season tour 👿 Pat must be given a chance in the Bok 10 jersey to show what he can do.

He needs a bit of Currie Cup action there first to work out the cobwebs.

  • Goosen picking up an unusual number (3 by now?) of serious injuries in one year. Is he physically up to senior rugby?

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 4) : Could be that he’s just young and “overgymmed/overstimulated” Muscles too strong too fast leads to easy ligament tears, or so I’ve heard. They just can’t cope.

  • @PTAShark (Comment 1) : @ChrisS (Comment 2) : If you want to rest these guys you’ll have to give them at least 3 weeks.

Giving a player a week of can’t really count as resting him imo. So everyone you’re not playing this week, should also not play in the semi’s or finals.

You can bet your entire fortune on the fact that Morne Steyn will start in the EOYT games. 😕

  • @Letgo (Comment 6) : That’s what I meant. The guys who played the majority of the Rugby Champs should be rested untill year end tour. Fringe players are more than welcome to play.

  • Goosen should have never been selected for the Boks in the first place.

After 40 minutes of rugby in what 4 months??

Elton or Lambie should be our first choice flyhalf.

  • @Letgo (Comment 6) : That’s what I meant. Beast, Alberts, Jannie and Marcell have played WAY too much this season. Look what happened to Deysel when he was overplayed. He broke down and has taken ages to regain some form.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 14) : apparently his tactical kicking is rubbish 😆

  • This should have been the season when Lambie, Goosen, Steyn, Jantjies and Peter Grant were playing starting flyhalf for their respective S15 franchises. It’s a pity it didn’t work out. We love Michalak in Durban but his arrival put Lambie’s career back a season. Goosen got injured and Jantjies was in and out and playing for a Lions team that were getting creamed. I wonder if we can get 4 of them starting for S15 franchises next year.

    Then I agree.

Should not even be considered. I know they will add a lot to our team. Especially in the front row, where we have been struggling at times, but this will not help the players or the Boks.

Is still young and although he was used more than enough, I think the game time will be good for his confidence after being dropped for the last 3 Bok games.

These are the guys that we need to use!

  • This is why i was wary of Goosen being thrown in the deep end early. There are exceptions, like Frans Steyn, Pat Lambie, James o Connor, Marcell etc, but generally i feel that players should only start to crack the national side at around 23/24, once their bodies are used to the rigors of Currie Cup and Superugby… Just IMO…

  • @Megatron (Comment 17) : He doesn’t have the biggest boot but I’ve seen nothing to suggest that his tactical kicking is rubbish. And if that is a perceived weakness then can’t the coaches work on that?

  • Comment 21, posted at 09.10.12 10:22:17 by ChrisS Reply
  • Steyn, Goosen, Jantjies…..Lambie would have done no worse than any one of these that were used, and maybe even better.
Skaam jou Meyer, and then you still lied about Keegan.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 22) : Lambie has the most complete game of the 3 young flyhalves. Goosen is a better kicker and Elton has a bit more flair on attack but Lambie would always be my pick even if he played for another province.

Same goes for Steyn, I wouldn’t pick him for the Boks even if he bled black and white!!

  • Welcome back Morne “deer-in-the-headlights” Steyn. How we’ve missed your “accurate” boot!

  • @ChrisS (Comment 23) : For sure, my comment is obviously made in hindsight but its really perplexing for me, that under Meyer, we have now played the series against England and completed the Championship series and Meyer couldnt find it in hgim to give Lambie just one shot at starting at flyhalf, this while not one of the other flyhalves really stood out and pmore so Steyn. If Im perplexed I can just imagine what Lambie is feeling.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 25) : I feel for him. Many people forget that he’s still a young guy and he must be very confused by this treatment!

  • Goosen should’ve been allowed to get some game time in the Currie Cup and eased back in after his lengthy layoff. I hope this opens the door for Lambie to start.

Yes, for three months back in 2010(?).
There was some confusion over the substance, and it had apparently been added and removed from the ‘banned’ list numerous times.
