Bulls coach Pine Pienaar has named all of his returning Springboks in the match 22 to take on the Lions in Johannesburg this Saturday, with six starting the match and two taking bench spots.

Zane Kirchner, Morne Steyn, Arno Botha, Jacques Potgieter, Juandre Kruger and Flip van der Merwe all start the match, while Francois Hougaard and Dean Greyling wait their turn from the bench. This does mean a whole host of players that have played for the Bulls so far this season completely fall out of contention, but that is the nature of the beast.

The new back three will see Kirchner join Akhona Ndungane and Bjorn Basson is an experienced trio, with Steyn pairing up with Jano Vermaak in the halfbacks. The loose trio changes include Botha and Potgieter joining captain Dewald Potgieter, while they have the luxury of calling upon an all Bok second row of Kruger and van der Merwe.

The Bulls need to win to keep hopes alive of a play-off spot, but I am sure we are all aware of the possibility that the Lions can knock them out this weekend.

Bulls: Zane Kirchner, Akona Ndungane, JJ Engelbrecht, Francois Venter, Bjorn Basson, Mornè Steyn, Jano Vermaak, Arno Botha, Jacques Potgieter, Dewald Potgieter (c), Flip van der Merwe, Juandrè Kruger, Werner Kruger, Willie Wepener, Mornè Mellett.

Reserves: Chiliboy Ralepelle, Frik Kirsten, Wilhelm Steenkamp, CJ Stander, Francois Hougaard, Louis Fouchè, Dean Greyling.

  • @JarsonX (Comment 2) : How would that affect the Sharks? If bulls beat the Lions, we would not have to beat Griquas to get home final. So if we let Griekwas win then Bulls would still be out? am I right? I know that we play Friday so don’t have the luxury of knowing who will win that match, I am just trying to cover all bases 🙂

  • The bulls coaching staff must be desperate..surely a guy like zane and morne should be far away from pretoria focusing on themselves then playing..killing confidence and the body with one rock..

  • I can’t believe they just put Louis Foche on the bench he is a much better player than Morne. Well me being a LION I am so happy to see Morne and Crusty the clown(Kirchner) back in the Bulls team that means the Lions will Take this one and go into the play-offs with lots of confidence hopefully top of the logg. I do not think that the Kwasse can beat Sharks at Home so I will back the sharks and then hope that WP can hold down the Cheeters. If this all happen then we can all enjoy the Bulls in a promotion religation spot.

  • Would it not be wonderful if the 2 powerhouses of SA rugby fail to make the semi’s? If the Free State can play like they played against us last week, they might just upset WP. Bulls don’t look that much better than without their Boks.

  • @Lassy_lion (Comment 9) : While I share your sentiment re the Bulls, you know it`s gonna take more than confidence for the Lions to upset the Sharks in Durban right?

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 14) : I know that confidance alone is not enough but remember in I think 2007 when the Ball bounched so nicely For Meyer “Kicker Captain Coach ” Bosman still with his John Deere uniform on to see the Cheeters take it away from the Bulls. Well with a guy like Jantjies putting it over the top and it bounces good for Taute and hey you never know our luck….. Of cause this is just all specilation but you never know. Just something to think about.
