Western Province have released a statement relating to loose forward Nick Koster, who is rumoured to be on the verge of an exit to Bath in the UK.
According to the release, Koster is indeed in negotiations with the west country club and should these prove successful, the WPRU will release him from his contract.
At one stage considered “the future of Western Province rugby”, a succession of injuries have blighted Koster’s career and he has been overtaken in the WP and Stormers pecking order by the likes of Siya Kolisi and Nizaam Carr.

Can I say it?
go ahead. Cant even remember him.
well they have rhodes now
just one of many you sa youngstes that was stuffed around by the powers that be. Maybe if he did not play wing for a season Kolisi and Carr would not have overtaken him at wp as he would have been set in the no 8 shirt.
WP is making a habit of this… Making big statements of “Players are the future of Rugby in WP etc etc…”… Just to release them 2 seasons down the line…
@SharksRTB (Comment 5) : Tiger Bax…anyone?
@Salmonoid (Comment 6) : isn’t this another of the okes that hendrikp reckoned was on the verge of captaining the Boks? Or was that someone else who said that?
@robdylan (Comment 7) :
Can anyone possibly keep track of ’em all? 😆
@robdylan (Comment 7) :
Not sure about Hendrikp, but definetley anything Cape media related had him written up as the next big thing. I think it was about the time of the first Varsity Cup competition.
I wonder what the psychological scars, if any, that type of hype leaves on someone that does not reach the heady heights others have unrealistically determined for them?
A player that failed to fire, unfortunately. He’s damn injury prone as well.
@Salmonoid (Comment 9) : He was highly rated as a schoolboy at Bishops, written about in papers week in and week out and I think one of the first youngsters we actually contracted while at school.
He struggled to make the SA u20 team, sat on the bench most games which I think was the first reality check. Very sad that we’re potentially letting go of a WP boy through and through, he writes such great columns on supersport and seems to have a great sense of humour.
@JD (Comment 4) : He was played on the wing for one season because of Rassie’s “thinking outside the box” and that was 2 years before either Kolisi or Carr appeared on the scene, so doubt it has anything to do with that. 2 major knee injuries is how he got leapfrogged, if at all. I still think he would’ve been picked (if fit) ahead of Carr (if fit).
I still have this really really hopeful part of me that likes to think we’re doing a bit of a trade, getting Flouw back in Koster’s place. I really really wish that was the case.
@robdylan (Comment 7) :
You’re partly right…
I did predict that he’d have a breakout year and make the Bok squad this year.
And he did start the season like a house on fire.
But then, AGAIN, he got injured. Really been the downfall of his career because when he’s fit he’s one of the best attacking loosies in the game, and added a bit of roughness to his game when he started the year.
@hendrikp (Comment 13) :
I think the ‘captaincy’ thing was added by someone as a joke to make it seem like a more stupid suggestion then it was (in my opinion of course)… Like saying the Sharks should try sign JP du Plessis, only to be accused of wanting him as the next Springbok captain 😆
@hendrikp (Comment 14) : ah well… at least you make an impact boet 🙂
@molly (Comment 11) :
Koster is good, but he ain’t no Pieter Louw (especially when it comes to Pieter’s sexiness) 😈 😀
