Sharksworld can confirm that Lions and Springbok utility back Jaco Taute has decided to join the Stormers on loan from next year’s Super Rugby competition.
Despite a number of options – and offers on the table – Taute’s agent Eduard Kelder confirmed from London this morning that his client had indeed decided that the Cape-based side had made the most compelling case and that discussion were now well under way to finalise the terms of the move.
Taute will be considered as both a fullback and centre option for Allister Coetzee’s side next year.

wow, good luck to him, Stormers are gonna be happy to have such a strong runner.
So this will be interesting
Great news, goodbye Average Joe!!! (for probably only a year 🙁 )
Wow, okay then.
Must want to play fullback.
@molly (Comment 3) : good signing for you guys… hope he allows you to be a bit more adventurous 🙂
@hendrikp (Comment 4) : I think that’s smart… everyone can see that there’s a big opportunity at 15 for the Boks waiting to be capitalised on.
@robdylan (Comment 6) :
Good point, but thought they’d have advised him to play centre.
If they get Jantjies as well, they will be incredibly hard to beat!!
@hendrikp (Comment 7) :
Not sure how I feel about this one.
The Province supporter is glad he’s coming. Very happy to have a BIG upgrade on Joe Pietersen at fullback.
The Springbok supporter knows that we need a fullback.
But I keep thinking he looks to be a better centre.
That’s the right choice for Taute and the Sharks. We have enough decent talent in the backline ranks.
@hendrikp (Comment 9) : He looks great at centre, but we all first noticed him at 15, where he just seems more comfortable.
I think maybe it’s easier to shine at 12/13, but I don’t know if he’s better in those positions, especially considering his defence in the midfield (based on his last game)
He surely could correct that, but still, he just seems more comfortable at 15 that 12/13.
@Letgo (Comment 11) :
Fair call. I hope he makes a good go of fullback then… because we desperately need an Isreal Dagg type.
Does this mean Jantjies will follow his team mate(s) (Cilliers/Rhodes) or does this mean that he might feel the Stormers is already loaded and come to the Sharks.
@Argex (Comment 8) : they’re hard to beat already… cos they never concede tries.
Sharks managed though. Twice.
Probdylan : Exactly!! The amount of depth they have now is scary!
@Letgo (Comment 13) : Thought he would join the Stormers. Elton is also going there. Stormers have the best squad in the competition. Good luck to them.
@Argex (Comment 15) : not always a good thing to have that much depth, though…
Can lead to squad unhappiness
Now just need Jantjies to announce the same.
We’ve got plenty of youngsters coming through, no time to baby sit for other unions. 😈
@robdylan : Yeah, that’s true!
9 Duvenhage
10 Jantjies
11 Habana
12 De Villiers
13 De Jongh
14 Aplon
15 Taute
That’s all Springboks except one.
@robdylan (Comment 17) : Hiyas Rob.
I believe the Sharks should have Jantjes and JC JVRensburg
@sharks_lover : Is that official yet?
For me people are forgetting the length of the Super15 and the strain players are taking.
I for one believe Lambie should be our starting 10, what if again though the injury bug strikes?? who will be our 10 then??
Bosman? i dont think he is consistant enough
Viljoen Not good enough
Zeilinga? seems to struggle lifting himself to that higher level.
Props? we need a strong LH as backup for Beast, our youngsters just not there yet.
TH is fine, with Doc, Wors and Schonert, and Redelinghuys
LH is my problem where Chadwick is so inconsistant it’s scary, potential he has but just lacks that something.
Nice…. now the Stormers have a better back line than last year. You know the one they don’t use.
@sharks_lover (Comment 22) : how do you know that Zeilinga struggles to lift himself to a level that he has never played ?
@robdylan (Comment 5) : holding thumbs, don’t think the adventurous problem is at fullback, although the amount of times the ball dies with Joe P is amazing, I really hope Groom and Schreuder get more game time and that Duvenhage gets relegated a bit.
@robdylan (Comment 24) : Because if he was Plum would have used him in the CC and not Viljoen for example.
Also at one stage in the under 21’s Jordaan was playing 10 amd not Fred. 😉
@robdylan (Comment 24) : Then maybe it is time Plum brought him in instead of playing centers and FB’s in place of a genuine 10
@sharks_lover (Comment 26) : Jordaan has always been a special talent (I think you yourself were calling him to play for the seniors last year already) and moves were made to accommodate him. I didn’t agree with those moves and hopefully the plan to use him at flyhalf has now been shelved. You can’t argue that Fred hasn’t looked the part in this year’s under 21 competition and with Viljoen, Bosman and Prinsloo already in the seniors squad, it was always unlikely that fred would get a run this year.
@robdylan (Comment 28) : True Rob and yes i was calling for JOrdaans inclusion. Don’t get me wrong mate, i would love to see Fred come through, like with Jordaan i was calling Fred a future star too, MAybe it is time Plum pulled him into the sqauad instead of using make shift 10’s like Viljoen.
The other 10 thats starting to show huge promise ids Robert du Preez jnr, very good footballer this kid is
@sharks_lover (Comment 29) : I am a huge fan of both Fred and Rob. Would love to see one of them emerge as strong challenger to Lambie in a year or two’s time.
I think Viljoen’s Sharks future will be a short one.
@robdylan (Comment 30) : Agreed, If plum is prepared to give the youngsters a chance?? then i gladly say “Jantjes? go to the Stormers lad, there you will become a good defender ”
😆
Good signing for them. And not a bad place to learn your centre or fullback trade – with the likes of JDV, Habana and Aplon to learn from.
I’m not unhappy that he isn’t joining us if it’s just for one year. Better to stick with long-term options IMO.
🙄
Good news for us as the sharks have a strong backline and options
@sharks_lover (Comment 31) : I think Jantjies is already a good defender, but I guess he can still get better.
I have been mighty impressed with Zellinga in the few games I have seen him play this year. Hauptfleish played in one of the games when Zelinga was injured and also looked good.
I haven’t been as excited about player movement in WP since the day Gus Theron retired.
@robdylan (Comment 35) : 😉 lol now Rob you know i wasnt questioning Jantjes ability as a defender? more the WP style of play 😉 😆
@sharks_lover (Comment 38) : yes, I know 🙂
@hendrikp (Comment 12) :
😆 he is nowhere close to a Israel Dagg type. Good player, but I am not unhappy that he has gone somewhere else.
@Bump (Comment 40) :
Meant rather the impact he needs to make to establish himself at fullback.
I’m not expecting him to try sidestep everybody if that’s what you’re thinking.
Okay, I hear you. I would rather see you guys playing Aplon from the back, far more destructive in open play from the back imho.
Someone was sleeping on the job here. All efforts should have gone into securing Taute’s signature. Elton should have never been on our list, we have Lambie to play 10.
@GreatSharksays (Comment 43) : why would you want taute when you have viljoen, ludik, lambie, odwa as 15 cover?
