The Lions went into the their game of the league stage of the Currie Cup knowing that the result will have no influence on their log finish or opponent in the semi-final this weekend, and despite the fact that key players were rested, a few injuries were picked up.

Deon van Rensburg will definitely not take any further part in this Currie Cup season, after the wing hurt his leg in the loss to the Bulls on the weekend. Lionel Mapoe is another player on the injured list, and while he left the field after hurting his knee, scans today will give a better indication whether he will be available for the Lions’ all-important home semi against Western Province.

If Mapoe is ruled out, we could see some interesting selections from coach Johan Ackermann, as he is sure to make changes and incorporate his Springboks in the starting fifteen, while keeping players such as Butch James, who have been instrumental this season so far.

Van Rensburg has thus played his last game for the Lions ahead of his move to the Kings next season.

  • Van Rensburg going to the Kings?? No loss imo.

  • Evwerytime Mapoe just starts getting some good form, he injures. Big blow for us if he is out. Taute will most likely play outside centre if Mapoe is injured
