According to reports from New Zealand this morning, All Black centre Ma’a Nonu has signed with the Highlanders ahead of the start of the 2013 Super Rugby campaign.

This will be Nonu’s second move in two years after joining the Blues from the Hurricanes last year, where the Blues were expected to push for honours and potentially a trophy in the cabinet. That failed horribly and the Blues are now under new management, with All Black great John Kirwan in charge of matters.

Nonu is expected to boost the Highlanders as they build their team into becoming a top contender, and with the extra depth and experience that Nonu offers, we might see the Highlanders’ goos start to the season push through the entire season, and potentially seeing them in the play-offs.

  • Burleigh & Treeby both won’t be happy, at all.

  • It’s been a rollercoaster ride for the big guy. Two years ago, the Hurricanes coach was willing to drop him and labelled him the most overrated player in Superrugby. Then Nonu made him eat his words as Graham Henry chose him for the World Cup squad and lauded him as the best centre in world rugby – and he certainly was at the World Cup. Then the Blues got hold of him and they fell apart like a toy from the Chinese shop. Hope the Highlanders work out for the guy. Always been one of my favourite players.

  • @shaniboi (Comment 3) : only problem, is there wouldn’t be enough space left on the field for a wing

  • kirwan is livid with his signing, he let go of hadleigh parkes because he thought nonu would come back to them next year but nonu being with the ABs and training with the likes of aaron smith, tamati ellison, ben smith, adam thomson, andrew hore and now tony woodcock changed his mind and decide to sign with the otago franchise…

this is the flipside of the centralised contract scenario that heyneke wants…a player can make up his own mind and if the NZRU endorses it, the SR coach is left hanging…
