No injury concerns ahead of final

According to a report on the Sharks website, the Sharks should have a full squad to call on ahead of this weekend’s Currie Cup Final.

The particular concern was around prop Jannie du Plessis, who went off after half an hour of Saturday’s semi-final after a nasty clash of heads with Anton Bresler. Coach John Plumtree has confirmed, however, that the decision not to send the Bok tighthead back out after his off-field concussion test was purely precautionary and that the big man showed no signs of discomfort after the game.

“Jannie is fine, he took a knock and wasn’t too good at half-time so I chose not to put him on after the break. But he was happy and smiling after the game,” Plumtree told Sharks website editor Michael Marnewick.

“We’re alright injury-wise, nothing to worry about.”

  • Good to hear.

I’m sure much mention will be made of the absence of Jean de Villiers and Tiaan Liebenberg for WP in the final, but the fact that Bismarck du Plessis and Frans Steyn are out for the Sharks (in the same positions) won’t be remembered.

  • @MerckZ (Comment 1) : well the sharks have never been allowed to use missing people as excuses as we are accused of whinging

Recent losses, of course it will be mentioned. Bissie & Frans have not played any CC rugby this season so weren’t necessarily ‘losses’.

Otherwise we could name JC Kritzinger, Andries Bekker, Schalk Burger, Siya Kolisi, Nizaam Carr, Dewaldt Duvenage & Gary van Aswegen as well.

  • Same side again except Burden starting and Cooper to bench. Sharks by 20 points if it’s wet. 27 points if it’s dry. 😉

  • Wondering where the next fabulous Springbok centre called JP du Plessis has gone? With Taute wanting to play centre, he is now number 4 in the pecking order.

  • True testament to provinces coaching staff to be where they are.

I don’t rate any of their side. They are either young and not hugely talented ,except Etzebeth, or are just old and pedestrian.

Duane ,Bekker ,Habbana, Catrikilis, LitleJoe, JDJ, Brok …yawn.

No x-factor ,granite like defense and good percentage based game plan that focuses on the basics.

  • Must say Sharks are heavy favorites, but I do think Province have a chance to cause an upset. Sharks weaknesses ;driving mauls. They will target us there.

  • How sharks will win? Kick and chase ,Joe Pietersen and Gio are inferior under the high ball to Ludik ,JPP …

We will win the scrum battle .With Catrikilis at 10 our defense wont really be tested .Fullback to cover any grubbers that Brache puts through and we are fine.

One place they may beat us is on the ground with Fourie

  • @Talent (Comment 10) : I think Jean Deysel is equal to the challenge of Fourie. Thought Fourie was lucky to stay on the field in their semi-final after “aggressively applying his fingers” to JC Janse van Rensburg’s “eye area”.
