The South African Rugby Union (SARU) has made public its nominees for the various awards on offer at a ceremony to be held on 1 November 2012, with the Sharks featuring in every category that they can be nominated in and standing a decent chance of picking up a few awards.
As you all know, the SARU Rugby Player of the Year was a ten horse race, which has now been cut down to five, three Sharks in Keegan Daniel, Pat Lambie and JP Pietersen while the Stormers are represented through Eben Etzebeth and Bryan Habana.
The Young player of the Year sees a single Sharks nomination in Marcell Coetzee, but the firm favourite has to be Eben Etzebeth from the Stormers/Western Province. Other nominees are Johan Goosen, Elton Jantjies and Cheetahs winger Raymond Rhule.
The ABSA team of the Year sees the Sharks being nominated twice, for their efforts in Super Rugby and then again for hosting the Currie Cup Final. Other teams are the EP Kings, for winning the Currie Cup First Division, the South African Under 20 team for winning the IRB Junior World Championship and the Stormers, for winning the South African conference in Super Rugby.
A sure win for the Sharks will be the award for Coach of the Year, where John Plumtree has led his team to two finals this year, with Allister Coetzee, Pote Human, Alan Solomons and Dawie Theron being the other nominations.
Other award dominated by Sharks is the Super Rugby Player of the Year, where four of the five nominations are Sharks in Marcell Coetzee, Bismarck du Plessis, Keegan Daniel and JP Pietersen being joined by a lone Stormer in Eben Etzebeth in this category.
Other Sharks to be nominated include Louis Ludik as the Currie Cup Player of the year and Gouws Prinsloo for the Vodacom Cup Player of the Year.
We wish all the Sharks representatives all the best in bringing back awards.

Gouws Prinsloo for Vodacom Cup POTY? He did have a very good campaign, didn’t he?
I would pick –
JPP
Etzebeth
SA u/20
Plumtree
Bismarck
Ludik
@Pokkel (Comment 1) : Daar is een….kyk HEEL onder! 😉 😆
@Pokkel (Comment 1) :
Damn I missed Jan Serfontein right at the bottom.
Surely the Under-20s will take team of the year.
Very nice 😎
Does this mean our voting en mass was just to get Keegan in the final 5?
@Die Kriek (Comment 8) : Seems like it…. 👿
At least Keegan topped the public vote that is as far as we can influence the vote.
@markp (Comment 10) : I questioned the exclusion of Marcell in the Player of the year – was given the answer that nominations came from media – 80% of them in JHB and Cape…so I wonder who does the final voting…this might be as close as Keegs would get to the trophy. At least we know he topped it by at least 4% – so lets hope theyr take that into consideration….
POY- Habana
YPOY- Etzebeth
TOY- SA U21
COY- Plumtree
S15- Bismark
CC- Rhule
1st div- ?
Vodacom-Catrikilis
Well, we can’t say that we were truly unbiased in our decision, but if the media votes for the winner I fear any form of public voice will be rendered moot. News24 has all but proclaimed Eben the winner
@Die Kriek (Comment 13) : exactly
@Amateur (Comment 12) : You and I are going to become un-friends with your selection… 😈
young player of the Year … Johan Goosen ? yes for all 80 min he played this season … what a boytjie …
I hop Andy Capastagno doesn’t get a vote for CCPOTY…
@robdylan (Comment 17) :
@Ice (Comment 15) : Come on Ice, what you unhappy with? If It is the first one, I originally had Daniel and Habana and Etzebeth and Bismark. Luckily they have a category for Etzebeth and Bismark elsewhere. Habana scored a hat trick against Aus and a superb try against the AB’s. He has been in great form for WP. Daniel has been in superb form in the CC and has scored some brilliant tries. Tried to look at it from a totally outsiders view. If Keegan had scored 4 international tries then he would already have the award. I realise that a wing has more opportunity. You know what? I change my mind everytime I think about it so just because you are so nice lets change the first award to Daniel. Watch a complete outsider get it. Any others you disagree with?
Another point is that, if Sharks win CC, they would probably get team of the year. I also think that performances of individual players in the final will count for and against them. People tend to forget the rest of the season. This counts against Bismark.
@Amateur (Comment 19) : Any other bloke, oke and chick on here would be able to give you that answer…YPOTY or SRPOTY… My vote goes tooooooooo *drumroll*….Marcell!
@Amateur (Comment 19) : The measure of a player is not by how many tries he scores, but by how he scores them, or helps others in his team to score. And not playing at international level enough to do it there is not his fault, but our lovely coach’s
I can’t see why Jantjies is in the group of Young Player of the Year. He is an old hand now because he is playing rugby for a while now. There are also other guys who could be nominated in this category. He received an award already in this category.
I can foresee a lot of Black and White walking away with awards.
@Marge (Comment 23) : You are so right! I was thinking the same… a bit odd.
@Ice (Comment 21) : Ohhh ok. I see we have a new hero. I hate to say it but S15 was all Bismark. He made more turnovers than any fetcher. Etzebeth has been outstanding as well. Marcel is right up there though. Great to have two youngsters of this class. Bodes well for the future.
@Die Kriek (Comment 22) : I hear you. The problem is that Habana didnt score too many whereby he just had to fall over the line. His all round play was also outstanding, except for his attempt at an interception in the Soweto game.
Youngsters to watch for awards next year: Jordaan and Reinach.
@Amateur (Comment 26) :
I agree S15 Player of the year must be Bismarck.
Is it a case of ‘out of sight out of mind’ with Bismarck?
@Pokkel (Comment 28) : I agree as well, but Marcell held a very impressive overall tournie record too. And if he does not get YPOTY, I at least want him then to get SRPOTY.
