The newly crowned Currie Cup champions caused a bit of a stir during their open bus tour through the City of Cape Town, with players throwing money at supporters.
Western Province Rugby Union was quick to release a statement this morning clarifying the issue, stating that some naΓ―ve players dropped money to begging individuals. What the players did not think about, was the danger in which they put themselves and others in the crowd by the possibility of fights and stampeding to get the money.
The Union has apologised for the incident.

Throwing things without care or attention can be a bit of a burden… π
Love the headline Rich!
@CapeShark (Comment 1) : I see what you did there π
@CapeShark (Comment 1) : π π
Rent a crowd.
Really poor taste by the players involved. π
Oh well, at least we won the Currie Cup! π
@wpw (Comment 6) : I’m not sure it was poor taste so much as poor judgement from guys with big hearts.
@wpw (Comment 6) : Congrats on the win btw
@Butchie34 (Comment 7) : Agreed, well put.
@Butchie34 (Comment 7) : Whats really pissing people off is that apparently there is a photo of the players looking down from the bus and laughing their heads off while the people scramble for the money.
@Salmonoid (Comment 10) : Thanks Salmonoid
That would make sense. I wasn’t aware of the photo. If that’s the case I can understand the anger completely
@Butchie34 (Comment 11) : I havent seen the photo myself, apparently its in the Argus. The morning talk show host on Cape Talk (Kino Kammies) was livid and I think was even more pissed off when he listened to the spin that Thelo Wakefield try to spin around it.
@Butchie34 (Comment 8) :
Thanks bru. It’s been a long time coming… π
@Salmonoid (Comment 12) : If rhere’s a photo it’s a little difficult to justify the action.
But sometimes photos don’t tell the whole story and maybe they didn’t realise the danger they put everyone in danger and were laughing their thanks. As much as they are WP players
I can’t imagine any of those guys wanting to hurt anyone (off the rugby field of course).
@Butchie34 (Comment 14) : I can’t imagine that anyone intended for anyone to get hurt, but the players were careless.
@Butchie34 (Comment 14) : I dont think the safety aspect is the big bugbear here, but more the privileged few atop a bus laughing at poor people scavenging for money that that they had thrown to them.
@Dancing Bear (Comment 15) : Speaking about Bears, Howdy sailor. Has Sandy been good to you and your remaining oak tree.
See – that is what happens when you allow the wrong crowd to win the Currie Cup π Shame on you Sharks
@Salmonoid (Comment 17) : Thanks for checking Salmonoid, things went as well as could be expected, I still have electrical power and internet, so can’t complain too much. It did get ugly Monday and Monday night, but things went as well as could be expected considering. Tree survived well. Hope all is well with you.
Glad to hear. All well this side, gearing up for summer which Im really looking forward to.
@Salmonoid (Comment 20) : It got cold here behind Sandy, starting to feel like winter.
