Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer has followed through on his promise of allowing Pat Lambie some game time in the flyhalf jersey, by selecting him to start the match against Ireland this Saturday.

Lambie will combine with Ruan Pienaar in the halfback positions, while the centre combination is unchanged from the last test played against the All Blacks, with Jean de Villiers and Jaco Taute named. Francois Hougaard makes a return to the side on the wing, while JP Pietersen makes his return after missing the Rugby Championship due to injury. Zane Kirchner remains at fullback.

Amongst the forwards, the front row is unchanged in Beast Mtawarira, Adriaan Strauss and Jannie du Plessis. In the second row, Juandrè Kruger starts ahead of the injured Andries Bekker, joining forces with Eben Etzebeth. Francois Louw has been passed fit and will start with Willem Alberts and Duane Vermeulen in the loose trio.

The extended eight man bench has the compulsory full front row in Schalk Brits, CJ van der Linde and Pat Cilliers, while Flip van der Merwe provides second row cover and Marcell Coetzee covers the loose trio. Back cover on the bench sees Mornè Steyn back in the fold, while Juan de Jongh and Lwazi Mvovo can look to add spark in the last few minutes.

The Springbok team to face Ireland in Dublin is:
15. Zane Kirchner (Vodacom Blue Bulls) 21caps
14. JP Pietersen (The Sharks) 45 caps
13. Jaco Taute (MTN Golden Lions) 2 caps

4. Eben Etzebeth (DHL Western Province) 8 caps
3. Jannie du Plessis (The Sharks) 39 caps
2. Adriaan Strauss (vice-captain, Toyota FS Cheetahs) 18 caps
1. Tendai Mtawarira (The Sharks) 41 caps

16. Schalk Brits (Saracens, England) 3 caps

  • Is this official?

Saw it on but now the story seems to have disappeared. Can’t find it anywhere else.

Thought the announcement was set for 2:30.

  • Team exactly as expected.

Bench however has one or 2 surprises, and i know some are surprised with Morne on the bench?? I am not and predicted it on RT, me reason being Morne is the option HM will have to fall back on if things are not working out.

Also i would have started JDJ at 13 and had Taute either on the bench or at 15.

In saying i predicted morne on the bench does not mean i fully agree with it?? I think HM could have had another Loose Forward on the bench and then used Ruan cover 10 with Hougaard covering 9

  • Surely we have better props than CJ – especially now that a full front row is required on the bench

  • Agree with selections except for 15. Worst 15 ever to play for Boks. Sorry, but that is my opinion. Steyn on the bench is perfect. If the weather closes in or the game becomes a Northern Hemisphere forward battle he can come on and play the kick and chase game. With the new 5 second law it will force Steyn to play flatter anyway. We have asked for Lambie at 10 and now have it.Up to him to prove he is the right guy. Would have loved to have seen Ruhle on the bench. Most exciting talent I have sen in a long time.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 15) : Completely agreed. We should be supplying Elton and Patrick with as many opportunities at flyhalf as possible on this tour.

  • lambie won’t finish first half as meyer will be in a hurry to bring msteyn back where he belongs… 😆

  • @Megatron (Comment 19) : I reckon if Lambie misses the 1st penalty from his own 10m line on the side line after putting through 3 successful kicks, Meyer will have all the reason he needs to bring on his love child – the warrior 👿

  • what is the point of celebrating lambie being in the team when he is going to play skop ‘n jag the WHOLE day?

  • Don’t understand the constant selection of hougie on the wing. Really like him but why not use a specialist wing in mvovo or rhule. I understand that he is young but so was james o conner. Happy wit pat at 10. Would like to see tuate at 15 and de jong at 13. Again playing players out of position when we have good players who play those positions

  • Comment 22, posted at 07.11.12 14:46:23 by sharkbok Reply

  • @Megatron (Comment 21) : Not even HM can coach common sense out of a player like Lambie, I trust that Lambie will steer Lambie’s ship as Lambie sees fit 😆

  • I’m disappointed to see Coetzee again on the bench. I would switch him and Alberts for several reasons.

    – Alberts is stronger off the bench when the opposition is tired after 60 minutes
    – Coetzee is better all-round as a flanker
    – Coetzee offers more in open play, which we usually have in the first half when playing in Europe. Second half is always tight

CJ van der Linde on the bench is a joke!

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 28) : I would have Taute on the bench, because Kirchner will give you stablility at the back on the international stage, which I’m not sure Taute will.

  • It would be better if we had a full-back with a bit more experience… Like Ludik. I know, he doesn’t have Test level experience but he has been playing Super Rugby for quite some time now and he has been the form full-back this year.

  • What a sick center combo would JdJ and Jordaan make? X-factor to the max. I would love to see them play together for the Boks in the near future. Or even next year when FS and Jordaan will be the combo for us(Sharks).

  • Not to worry, our backline in 2015 will be this:

    9. Reinach, 10. Lambie, 11. Rhule, 12. Whitehead, 13. Jordaan, 14. Pietersen, 15. Taute

    21. van Zyl, 22. Ludik, 23. Le Roux

  • @TRF_Ezequiel (Comment 35) : I like that backline a lot!
@Here be dragons (Comment 34) : Yes, but the defence is a work in progress! I believe Jordaan will sort out any thing he lacks on defence, JdJ IMO does have good defence. No problem there.

  • I prefer a more physical player at inside center though. Jordaan and de Jongh are both quick outside centers and to have a solid guy like Whitehead inside them would really help. Also, Serfontein looks like a very talented inside center. Almost forgot about him

  • Jordaan is a physical player, I just want to see him settled a bit more in defence. No doubt he can tackle, the rest just takes time an experience. He is a classy young back. Agree with that backline, looks good! Maybe Goosen in, just for outside half cover. Also agree with regards to Whitehead/Serfontein.
