Lambie unsure of best position

My opinion on the Springbok flyhalf situation has been made quite clear over the last few weeks, and even though my opinion is that Elton Jantjies is more deserving of a shot at the Bok 10 jersey, I am happy that Pat Lambie is given a shot rather than going back to the tried and tested MornΓ© Steyn.

Lambie was selected to start the match against Ireland in the flyhalf berth, but when speaking to SportLive, made it clear that he himself does not rule out a return to fullback.

Lambie was quoted as saying that he will give his best at flyhalf this weekend but that he wants to make a position his own, whether it is at flyhalf or fullback. Further, he said that he does not want to throw all his eggs in one basket, explaining that Meyer spoke to him about his shortcomings as a flyhalf, and that he is happy that the coach put them on the same page regarding the position.

Lambie’s form at flyhalf in the last three games he has played has been fantastic, and if he can take that form into this match against Ireland, it will be difficult for Heyneke Meyer to drop him for the Scotland clash next weekend.

As for Elton Jantjies, my opinion is that he should make the most of playing in a stronger team during Super Rugby next year and push to be part of the Bok setup during the international window, because come June, it will once again be a four-way tie as to who wears the Bok jersey, including a fit again Johan Goosen.

  • LAMBIE! Grow some balls can’t you? Stop this bs, today now. You will end up just like your older Sharks team mates.

  • Elton and Pat deserve a fair chance. Steyn shouldn’t even be on tour!

Goosen still has a lot to prove and shouldn’t be rushed in again! He has talent but it seems that his body can’t handle the knocks!

  • What is this with Sharks players being prepared to play out of position just to make the Bok team.

  • Only ‘shortcoming’ he really has is not having the boot of a Goosen in terms of distance, and perhaps the speed of the mark.

He just needs to stick to playing 10.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 3) : I think its because if they don’t, apparently they not willing to play for the team then.

  • And Morne Steyn never had any shortcomings as a 10? πŸ™„

South Africa will never win a World Cup with this fool as our coach. Just my opinion though.

  • Plum already said that Lambie will be first choice flyhalf next year. I understand that he is willing to play in any position but he is doing himself no favours by not choosing a position and sticking to it. Come-on Pat stop being mr. nice guy and decide on only playing flyhalf.

    Maybe Lambie`s got a point.
Fullback could be his best position.

  • lambie is sensing the bias in the Bok camp, meyer has already said that after this year he is going forward with ONLY 2 flyhalfs and no more, so Goosen has first dibs and morne – the warrior – is the coach’s pet leaving lambie and elton in limbo.

at full back lambie will play 2nd fiddle too as meyer has taute ear-marked as the next best thing.

so either way lambieghini is going to ride pine.

  • @Megatron (Comment 17) : Considering Goosen as a permanent fixture in the Bok lineup is like thinking that Bekker will never get injured again.

Die seuntjie is heeltemal te sag vir rugby – he’ll get to play his 1 and a half cameos each year and then the true rugby manne will once again be reinstated.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 19) : I rate Goosen as a very good talent, but for HM to annoint him as first choice flyhalf at this stage is madness. I would like Jantjies, Goosen and Lambie to fight it out for the 10 spot over the next 2-3 years.

  • Ok, let me put it this way. A coach, shall remain nameless, at club level, started Lambie at 15 off the bench. The difference he made was immediate. A few games later the team needed a 10 and Lambie stepped up. The coach was more than thrilled with the performance and he kept Lambie there. What did happen was that the team got front foot ball at 10 the backline started moving nicely but the opportunities out wide were not taken advantage of. A move back to 15 for Lambie resulted in tries. Those who say he does not have pace have not seen his stats. Everyone has their opinion and I respect that. This kid is good enough for both positions but his longevity in the game will be best suited to 15. SA have plenty of 10’s now but no genuine 15’s. I know what I would do but what do I know?

  • So Lambie is to small for 10, meyer needs a big guy at 10. Let’s see Goosen 1.85m 89kg, steyn 1.84m 91kg, Grant 1.86m 93kg, Elton 1.76m 84kg, Lambie 1.77m 92kg, yes now I also see Lambie is just to small to play 10 for bokke. Just for info Dan Carter at 1.78m 93kg would also be to small to play for meyer.
