After being placed in a tough group with last week’s Dubai winners Samoa, France and Australia, South Africa had no problem finishing top of their pool.
The thing about sevens is that it’s very unpredictable; one week you are the tournament winner the next you don’t even qualify for the Cup play-offs.
In South Africa’s first game they had no problem sweeping Samoa out the way, with Cecil Afrika showing just what a tremendous and valuable player he is, helping South Africa to beat Samoa 29-7.
The second game they really needed to dig deep for a win against France, only managing to take the lead with 4min to go, final score 12-5.
The final game of the evening for South Africa was against Australia. Australia who got thumped by France in their 1st game 31-5 and managed to beat Samoa 26-7 in their 2nd just wasn’t good enough to ruin South Africa’s unbeaten run in front of their home crowd, final score 17-7.
South Africa will advance to the play offs unbeaten with 3 from 3 with Portugal being the only other unbeaten team in Pool D.
South Africa will face United States in their Cup quarter final today at 12:39pm
