The Super season is yet to kick off so this is a fun opinion piece, just to wake everyone up a bit.

Everyone has their favourite players that they feel should be Springboks and there are players we feel deserved a shot but didn’t get it or
should have had more of a chance in the Green and Gold.

Below is my “Unlucky” 22. Some are still around and some have moved on. Put up your teams below and let’s see who I missed out.

1. Deon Carstens
2. Schalk Brits
3. BJ Botha
4. Geo Cronje
5. Anton Van Zyl
6. Warren Britz
7. Joe Van Niekerk
8. Shawn Sowerby
9. Craig Davidson
10. Peter Grant
11. Dean Hall
12.Trevor Halstead
13. Ettienne Botha
14. Brent Russell
15. Johan Roets

16. Craig Burden
17. Richard Bands
18. Gerhard Mostert
19. Jacques Botes
20. Jano Vermaak
21. Elton Jantjies
22. Joe Pietersen

  • Dean Hall? Johan Roets?? I shall recuse myself from this debate…

  • @Culling Song (Comment 1) : Haha! No man, put in your substitutes instead.

I liked Dean Hall at Super Rugby level but felt that we never saw the best of him on the international stage.

Johan Roets was a very solid and dependable fullback which was why I included him although there is also a call for Stefan Terblanche to have been the fullback in my squad or Louis Ludik.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 2) : I’ll put in my squad once I’ve had a lie down to get over seeing Dean and Johan’s names being mentioned in the same sentence as Bok jersey… Just for the record, I’m not even pretending to be objective here. Forewarned is forearmed…

  • Keegan Daniel should definitely be there. He should have had much more time in the green and gold by now.

  • @Orelando_G (Comment 5) : @robdylan (Comment 6) : Good point. Who else would you guys have liked to see more of?

  • Butch James due to injury .I would say he was unlucky not to get more caps.

Keegan Daniel, only for the last few seasons.

Cant think of many more that deserve a bok call up, there are many that could have had more test caps had they not played behind certain world class players.

  • Waylon Murray Brad Barrit?

  • Comment 9, posted at 14.01.13 13:22:55 by Talent Reply
  • @Talent (Comment 9) : 2 good talents. They were our best centre combination leading up to the 2007 World Cup.

I though of Butch but felt that we’ve seen far less of Peter Grant and Elton.

  • @robdylan (Comment 11) : Both should have been at the World Cup instead of Olivier and Julies!

  • @Talent (Comment 16) : I love Anton to bits, but his ball-carrying technique needs to improve a lot before we could think of using him as a flank.

  • @robdylan (Comment 17) : Ya probably ,jeez hope he gets a shot at the green and gold next year.

  • Comment 18, posted at 14.01.13 18:22:45 by Talent Reply
  • @Talent (Comment 18) : think how far he’s come already…. in 2 years he’s gone from literally nowhere to being the first-choice lock (in either position) for the Sharks.

Anton has been fighting the system his whole life and he’ll continue to do so. I reckon a cap will come, but perhaps later in his career once Meyer has moved on.

  • @robdylan (Comment 19) : I hope so .

If I had the material Id love to make a video compilation of him compared to Bekker or even Juandre Kruger. Not even Etzebeth tackles or cleans out like Bresler does. The other guy who is unlucky in the lock department is Flip .

  • Comment 20, posted at 14.01.13 18:36:31 by Talent Reply
  • @Talent (Comment 20) : Flip doesn’t have the hear that Bresler does. Nor does Kruger

  • Pat Lambie AT FLYHALF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He’s been the best 10 since currie cup in 2010 and only got a real chance now at the end of 2013. Should have had atleast 20 caps at flyhalf by now.

  • @robdylan (Comment 21) : Kruger dragged the Springbok jersey through 20m of mud being towed along by some Ausie prop, but still has the nerve to stand up to another player in a scuffle on the field ,like he would do anything.

I heard Brad Thorn turned down the All Black jersey because he didn’t think he was good enough. Juandre Kruger is now jumping ship for greener pastures .So long pretender…

Bresler should make more of a scene ,tell a few magazines how much he bench-presses pick on a few scrumhalves and get the mad eye ala Etzebeth 🙄 😆

  • Brent Russell… but at outside half!
Enigmatic little player, I was as impressed as ever when he played with Smit last June.

  • @Here be dragons (Comment 24) : He was amazing during the John Smit Testimonial!!

I considered him at 10 but wanted him to have more space in which to work. He should have had at least 50 caps for the Boks. Matt Giteau is the same size and he earned almost 100 caps for Oz. Jake White was too size obsessed! 🙄

  • Hi guys, been reading the banter for a long time now.

    Would like to add:

    Tony Watson and Wayne Fyvie
    Fully agree re Brad Barrit

  • @ChrisS (Comment 25) :
It might have been my favourite match last year. Turned quite a few Sharks around, he’s still got it! The problem with Russell was that he was atypical for a South African back, they didn’t know what to do with him. Same thing happened with Shane Williams. It took the Welsh management a few seasons before they knew how to use him. I always feel that the loss of Russell to international rugby was one of the biggest of all time.

  • @Here be dragons (Comment 27) : He turned back the clock and really dazzled the fans!

He wasn’t one dimensional and boring and so the management didn’t know what to do. Paulse was also small and yet they used him. If he’d played for any other first-tier country he’d be considered a legend now and held in the same regard as Shane Williams and Jason Robinson!
