Stormers coach Allister Coetzee might have a selection headache sooner than he expected, with news that Peter Grant could be ready to play from the first weekend of Super Rugby.
The Stormers face the Bulls at Loftus in the opening weekend and Grant could be back from his annual stint with the Kobe Steelers in Japan.
This leaves Coetzee having to decide whether to stick with the tried and tested and run with Grant at flyhalf, or allow Elton Jantjies, who will be playing the warm up games against the Cheetahs and Boland, to let the backline run.
It was reported that Jantjies went to the Stormers instead of joining the Sharks as a result of a guarantee made that he will have the flyhalf jersey, but with Grant in the mix from the start of the season, it could throw a spanner in the works, as Elton would have been expecting to play the opening rounds with Grant still in Japan, and in such a way cement his spot.
At the end of the day, no player can be guaranteed a jersey in such a long season, and the two are likely to split the flyhalf duties through the year.

With the injury track record of the stormers I guess both players will get more than enough game time…
Stick with Jantjies!
You signed him, now use him . . .
Convert Grant to inside center 😉
@FireTheLooser (Comment 3) : Agreed, if he played number 12, he would be the best 12 in the country.
@Orelando_G (Comment 4) :
better than one Frans Steyn?
@Orelando_G (Comment 4) : @Richard Ferguson (Comment 5) : Grant on the bench covering 10 and 12 for the Boks would be a good option. He’s also played 15 for the Barbarians and I believe in Japan.
The season is long and rotation is needed for the Super teams as well as for the Boks.
I still dont believe Jantjies is quality enough for the fuss, but we shall see how he lives up at the stormers
@Viking (Comment 1) : As will three other flyhalfs and Jaco Taute. Don’t they normally use about 14 different flyhalfs in a season? 👿
