Another specialist hanging around Kings Park

Sharks management must have been reading Sharksworld over the last few months, as news has filtered through about a specialist defence coach spending some time at the Shark Tank.

The Sharks website reports that Springbok defence coach John McFarland spent a few sessions with the Sharks, to help them prepare for the Super Rugby season that kicks off in three weeks’ time.

Even though the help may not have been at the request of John Plumtree, it is reported that it is an initiative by the Springboks to lend a hand at each of the Super Rugby franchises and getting all South Africans playing in a similar way, the help will go a long way.

McFarland joined Carlos Spencer at the Sharks in preseason as outside specialist, Spencer being reported as helping young Pat Lambie, and surely the likes of Fred Zeilinga as well, with their flyhalf play. Plumtree hinted that he would have liked Spencer around a little longer, but that he will help the team out throughout the season.

  • I still don’t know how McFarland got the bok defense coach role. Under him the Bulls conceded so many tries – they just happened to also score many. If I heard that Nienaber was helping out, I would have thought it a boon. The Sharks’ defense is in any case on par with the best, particularly if you look at the latter half of Superrugby 2012.

  • So they weren’t really reading SW. It was sort of forced on them, why am I not surprised 🙁

  • @King Shark (Comment 1) : I saw somewhere that Nienaber is now involved with the Springbok management (while still being with the Streamers).

So maybe Nienaber will be the brains behind the defensive structures, and McFarland charged with executing it. Who knows?!

  • “getting all South Africans playing in a similar way” translation, Blou Bul rugby! Why not ask the Sharks and Stormers coaching staff to lend a hand at the Boks rather? Our attack with Nienaber’s defense. Sound good?

  • Please keep him away. The boks defence was not something the Sharks should aspire to. Too many missed first time tackles with players trying to tackle around the chest to force the turnover, rather than focussing on the first objective which is to get the player with the ball to the ground.

Instead of getting a defence coach, they should just make everyone watch how Pat Lambie does it.
