We believe that former SARFU and Lions supremo, Doctor Louis Luyt, has passed away.
Luyt, who had a long and colourful career in the South African business world, had a strong passion for rugby and was a key figure in turning his beloved Transvaal Rugby Union into the powerful force it became in the mid-90s. As head of the national body as well, he oversaw the country’s hosting of the 1995 World Cup and played a strong role in bringing professionalism to the game thereafter.
Luyt is said to have died of a heart problem, at the age of 80. Our sincerest condolences go out to all his family and friends at this difficult time.
