Sharks to gain a Hoff – and lose a Hoffmann

There’s good news for the Sharks, with coach John Plumtree confirming that Bok eighthman Ryan Kankowski is expected back in Durban this week.

Kankowski – affectionately known as “the Hoff” due to an uncanny resemblance to 80s screen legend David Hasselhoff – has been with the Toyota club in Japan for the last six months, but apparently wrapped up his commitments to them over the weekend and should be on his way back to the Sharks to join them for pre-season. This is according to a quote on the Sharksrugby website late last week.

The news is less good for forgotten Sharks scrumhalf Conrad Hoffmann, whose horror run with injuries simply won’t let up. Hoffmann came to the Sharks (injured) in 2010 on a two-year deal and has spent the vast majority of that period in rehabilitation for some or other ailment. His contract, we understand, was not renewed at the end of last year and since he is currently, yet again, on the injury list, he’s apparently without a professional gig at all at the moment.

Hoffmann is understood to be back in Cape Town, looking for a day job, raising the interesting question of who, exactly, the Sharks third-choice scrumhalf will be this season.

  • Good news about Kanko. Does anyone know what his form has been like over in Japan?

  • Pity about Hoffman, Morne really rated him and I tend to trust his judgement on CT players. He definitely got it right on Johann Sadie and Tim Whitehead.

  • The sad thing is that McLeod is still the first choice scrumhalf. What do we have to do to get a quality scrumhalf???

  • Hoffman really didn’t do much while at the Sharks, he looked half asleep while on the bench and came across as being completely disinterested in the game being played.

So no real loss in the end.

  • @lostfish (Comment 5) : Who says Mcloed is first choice?…Cobus started in both knockout games in Currie Cup…i don’t think Mcloed is 1st choice. Also Mcloed should not be IMO, his unforced error stats are absolutely shocking!!

BTW, i was told (Rumour) that Riaan Viljoen was passing off the ground in a couple Sharks practice sessions lately…we will have to wait and see if he can even do a job at 9…i would rather back Hanco Venter as our 3rd choice scrummie.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 9) : if we’re going to get concerned about Charl’s error rate at scrumhalf, then please, let’s not think of playing Viljoen there! Tjop is possibly the most gaffe-prone player we have in our entire squad!

  • @JJR (Comment 7) : Not to be size-ist, but I think Viljoen is a little too big to play scrummie.

  • Mcleod and his passing is key to the type of game we want to play .He does have a high error rate but in my mind he is still the first choice scrummy .Mcleod is as tough as nails and has been in the system longer ,let Reinach play himself into the team based on Super Rugby cameos rather than his form in the currie cup.

I stand to be corrected but was it Cobus who miss marked JDJ in the try in the cc final?

  • @Talent (Comment 13) : I agree totally, Reinach cost us the CC, that’s one thing for sure. His play was the worst I have seen any scrummy play for the sharks in recent years. I dont understand the negativity around Mcloed from fellow members here. Mcloed has done more than what he gets given credit for.

  • Furthermore we need to show some loyalty to our seasoned campaigners .Playing every youngster that has a good hot step cheapens the jersey and cant be good for morale either. He should be happy to be on the bench behind a far more experienced player.

I watched an interview where JPP said that he(a Springbok veteran) had learnt alot from playing alongside Tim Whitehead in the centers ,Whithead with far less experience at this level of Rugby but more experience in the midfield than JPP, and thought that is the type of player we want: A player who has a huge heart and spadefuls humility.

Letting youngsters leapfrog seniors will cause unease and give that young player a swollen head.

  • @Uli (Comment 15) : If we drop a player because of 1 bad game, then we would never have a team.

Important that Reinach learns from the occasion of the CC Final and doesn’t make the same mistake the next time. Also don’t think it was a case of Reinach costing us the CC. There were several areas where we were poor, like the lineout. You gonna drop Bresler because of that?

  • @Uli (Comment 15) : He is rather pedestrian at SupeRugby level. His kicking game isn’t good enough, he spends far too much time faffing around at the rucks, his passing isn’t accurate enough and he doesn’t have a bit of x factor. He is just very average where we need someone a lot more dynamic.

  • Our scrumhalves are just fine, why on earth are we always being so negative about our players?? Mcleod or Reinach can start , i don’t think we have a problem there.

The Viljoen at 9?? again WTF, we want to play players out of position?? then we all blame the coach?? and of course the player will get slated by supporters to no end???

NEE MAN, play the players in their rightful position and if we get a injury to one of our scrummies then call in a young backup Venter who by the way is the first choice for the SA under 20 team.

  • @lostfish (Comment 22) : Come now Fishy, in the final we nearly won in the end and that was when Mcleod came on, don’t get me wrong every player has his faults, but we seem to look at one problem a player has and we nail him on it?? we do not give him credit however for the 50 things he does well??

  • Well, with Hoffmann out it does give us a chance to bring Hauptfleish or Venter into the team. I know it’s a bit thin on experience with both Reinach and one of these youngsters. What is the other option? Aquire a scrum-half. But who? Piet van Zyl looks to be at a dead end with Sarel Pretorius being favored over him. Why not get him to sign? Also young, but has SR experience already.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 25) : That is the Currie Cup. SupeRugby is a different kettle of fish. McLeod is an average scrummie and you need more than that in SupeRugby. Reinach is young and has a lot to learn. Sharks need a good quality scrummie to start in SupeRugby.

  • To me it is such a close call between McLeod and Reinach. They should commit to a structured rotation between the 2 from the start of the season. 3 matches on, then 3 on the bench.

  • Imo Mcleod is not at super rugby level.

Your forwards cant do all the hard work and then let the scrummie knock the ball.
because he doesnt look at it when he picks it up

  • @Uli (Comment 15) : @Butchie34 (Comment 18) : If we are crucifying Reinach because of the CC final, then best we find a new Flyhalf pronto, cause Lambie did not exactly bathe himself in glory on that day, and then we are really stuffed as far as hookers are concerned because after that final Burden should then be permanently benched or sent to Impis! And Bresler couldn’t catch a single, yep not one ball on that night! what the hell are we doing looking at him as our SR lock?! 🙄

Reinach is just fine he is our future! a good rotation between McLeod and Reinach should be just fine for our SR aspirations!

Well said. Every players has the odd bad game and people only ever remember those. I watched the 2010 CC Final again recently and McLeod played a brilliant game. Maybe the pressure from Reinach will get McLeod back to his best.

Its a new season and with all the comp in the team I am sure they will not lack the motivation to go out there a do the business! McLeod will whant to prove a point and Reinach will whant to make the jersey his, I am quite sure they will be quite a handfull for the oposition!
