The Sharks look to have picked up at least two serious injuries from tonight’s 71-8 rout of the Leopards in Pietermaritzburg.
According to the Sharks website, captain Keegan Daniel appears to have suffered an MCL injury, while centre Tim Whitehead may have broken his arm.
If either of these injury fears is confirmed, then the Sharks will have paid a dear price indeed in a nothing game.
We’ll keep you updated as more details emerge.

Ag NOOO! ๐
So was plum justified in playing fransie as captain seeing as both whitehead might not be available for 12 and keegan might be captain. Irony at its worst..let’s hope these boys injuries aren’t as bad as they sound..
Shit man! And Keegs just got into this so nicely!
Tha’s really bad news. Hope both players will be fine and that it’s not as bad as was first feared.
Luckily, the injuries are in positions we have well covered.
@Ice (Comment 3) : Yes Sharks will mis Keegs but they do have enough loosies to cover for him. I think Tim will be missed more as only Steyn and Jordaan to replace him. Sharks needed three good centres for super rugby.
@JD – I meant the Captaincy!
@Ice (Comment 7) : yes he was really growing as a captain, but let’s hope for the best and that he will only miss a week or two. With Bissy also out maybe Steyn or Pat will become captain for the time that Keegs will be gone. Just shows that no rugby game is ever soft or easy. Rugby = contact sport = injuries at any time in any game.
True that JD!
This is no good.
@JD (Comment 6) : Don’t forget Bosman
@FireTheLooser (Comment 11) : Did not forget Bosman, but I do feel that he’s a beter 10 than 12. Yes at 12 Bosman and Butch can do the job for the Sharks. Problem for Sharks is at 13 as their only 2 options was Tim and Jordaan. Don’t like moving Frans or JPP to 13 as they are world class in their first choice position and need to play there. Same goes for Pat to play 10 and not any other position ever again.
How serious is Keegan’s injury?
Unlucky boys! Hopefully you heal well, we are behind you
@JD (Comment 12) : One injury and all of a sudden we are thin at 13….scary stuff ๐ฏ
you’re all forgetting Marius Joubert….
Viljoen ever play outside centre?
Never hurts having two centres who can slot a dropgoal from their own goal line!
Nooooooooo!!!!!
“youโre all forgetting Marius Joubert..” That’s by choice! LOL
what about the Hoff as captain, Keegan is a game winner and Whitehead a wall on defense.
We have back up Plum just needs to put his thinking cap on and make dicision that will be best for the team.
@robdylan (Comment 16) : ๐
Might need to look at a 13 for back up, hope Jordaan stay injury free this season, he is deadly on attack. Steyn breaking the line off loading to Jordaan running with Mvovo and JP sounds like trouble to me ๐
I hope Whitehead likes scuba diving. ๐
Ouch. Every year it’s the same – injuries before the season even starts. We just joining the Kings and others in the hospital line!!!At least we have quality backup
๐ฅ Oh dear, that is bad news indeed. keegs was the closest the Sharks had to an out and out fetcher. He was sublime last year. Luckily the Cheetahs are also likely without Brรผssow.
There is enough loosie cover for sure, but keegs brought a nice balance to the combo.
How did Dell’s debut go?
Noooooooooooooo!!!!!! both stars last year….. man this is unfair ๐ฟ
Definitely not good news. Hopefully they will both heal quickly and properly. Best of luck guys!
Just asked Keegan on Facebook and he said.
‘Slight knock. Assessment to follow.’
Let’s hope it’s not too bad.
@KingCheetah (Comment 25) : sounds like he played really well.
@Pokkel (Comment 28) : Let’s hope so. Keegan needs to be available. What about Timmy, is the arm really broken? Pray it’s not.
Argh – I was hoping to read a match report saying how brilliant and un-injured everyone had been. I thought Bismarck would be the only player we’d be waiting on in the early part of the season (as it was with Beast last year). Alas…
Hope they’re not out for too long. So, not to get ahead of ourselves, but everyone thinks we have decent back up at loosehead with Dell? Would he have leap-frogged Chadwick in the pecking order even without Chadwick’s injury?
Early season injuries served us well last year ๐ Hopefully it isn’t that serious
@KingCheetah (Comment 25) : went well, carried well, scrummed well on both sides, made some huge tackles, got a turnover or 2 and scored a try
Any new news on the injuries?
@robdylan (Comment 16) : @Ice (Comment 19) : I’d rather have Burden play 13 or even Tim with a broken arm than have that guy back in the Sharks jersey.
Sounds like it might be 6 weeks for Tim. Keegan we don’t know… Needs to go for a scan
@robdylan (Comment 36) : eina going to miss Tim. Who do you think will cover 13 with Jordaan? Hoping Keegan will only miss a week or two.
@JD (Comment 37) : Jouba and JP, would be my guess
Will the pumas game be on tv next week ?
@robdylan (Comment 36) : 6 weeks isn’t bad.
@GreatSharksays (Comment 40) : it’s a shitload worse than no weeks…. Ok, so on reflection it’s not as bad as it could be, but I’m worried that we really don’t have much backup in the position at all.
@robdylan (Comment 41) : Silver Lining: Can you think of a centre pairing potentially more dynamic than Steyn-Jordaan? There’s a lot of brain-farts collectively waiting to happen in that duo, but when they synch, it could be magic…
@MerckZ (Comment 42) : I hear you, MerckZ – and it’s a wonderful thing for us. I’m just really concerned that we are now one injury away from a crisis at outside centre.
@robdylan (Comment 43) : 2 injuries away. Don’t forget our Spingbok Marius Joubert. ๐
@robdylan (Comment 43) : @Pokkel (Comment 44): One injury could bring Marius Joubert into reckoning. That would be a crisis of Chernobyl-like proportions
What about piet lindsomething
@juba_fan (Comment 46) : Bulls man now
I am trying to understand why it was a “nothing game”. Was it because of the injuries. Would a practice be termed a nothing practice if there were a few injuries. Teams have to play warm up games, players have to get the rust out of their system. You can’t just launch into a Super 15 season. No warm up game or practice can be termed “nothing”. The other option would be worse injuries and a play off against the Lions to stay in the Super 15 after a poor “unprepared” season.
