Stronger Sharks for Pumas

John Plumtree has named a near full-strength Sharks line-up to face the Pumas in Nelspruit on Friday evening.

The combinations picked send a strong indication about Plumtree’s perceived first-choice side, with a completely new front row comprising Beast Mtawarira, Craig Burden and Jannie du Plessis perhaps an easy one to predict. Anton Bresler joins Franco van der Merwe in what should be the lock combination to start the season proper, while injuries to Keegan Daniel, Marcell Coetzee and Willem Alberts mean that the loose trio is unchanged from the unit that scored 5 tries between them against the Leopards.

Plumtree has confirmed via the Sharks website that Ryan Kankowski was not considered for this game, but will come into the selection frame, along with Coetzee and hopefully also Alberts, ahead of the Cheetahs clash next weekend.

The selection of Cobus Reinach at scrumhalf speaks volumes, a clear indication that the young star looks set to displace Charl McLeod as first-choice, while the backline shows further changes in Paul Jordaan, JP Pietersen and Louis Ludik replacing (injured) Tim Whitehead, Odwa Ndungane and Riaan Viljoen respectively.

An extended bench includes young players like Allan Dell, Pieter-Steph du Toit and Super Rugby newcomer Francois Kleinhans, brought in from the Vodacom Cup squad to add loose-forward depth during the current injury crisis.

Francois Steyn captains the side from inside centre.

I suppose he need a bit of a rest and is already ‘matchfit’

    Tight five as expected…

  • @Butchie34 (Comment 20) : so two things here:

    1) Alberts MUST be used sparingly… perhaps almost as a last resort if Deysel/Coetzee/PSDT aren’t going to cut it….
    2) This is why we can’t use Alberts as a captaincy option.

  • @Uli (Comment 2) : Elaborate please…imo Reinach is a lot better quality than the King of the unforced error that is Charl. Reinach does the basics brilliantly whereas Charl’s basics have been very poor for the last 2 seasons pretty much…all comes down to his lack of composure and not knowing when to speed and it up and when to slow it down…last year he got that wrong so often.

Forwards gain lots of ground and momentum and then Mcloed would chip over the top or call for another pod of forwards, wth… or on the other hand we would be in our 22 and he would decide to try an amazing offload that works maybe 4/10 times!

@FireTheLooser (Comment 28) : @robdylan (Comment 29) : Maybe the surgeon fixed one problem and the continued problem shows there’s another one. Only using my shoulder as an example, I had an op to fix the torn cartlidge in front of the shoulder and I still have to go back because after that healed and the shoulder wasn’t better that they found there was a bit on bone missing in the shoulder and they need to put a pin in.

His 76% success rate is low, but not the lowest. PS du Toit and Odwa Ndgunane each returned 70%.

Look, I have all the respect for the dude, and personally he is such a nice guy, but to have to use a guy sparingly and play him 10 minutes a game, seems a little pointless?

Sorry for the negativity, but when last did he play consecutive matches without the fans fearing for him to get injured again.

  • I’m glad to see Kleinhans there, we’re gonna need a guy with his fetching skills.

Flouw showed with the Boks last year, a decent fetcher can single-handedly destroy the opposition.

Nothing kills morale like being 5 meters from the tri-line just to have the ball turned over and finding yourself on defense again, Or giving away penalties for holding onto the ball every time you try to launch an attack.

The opposition attack will be turned into kick and pray and effectively nullified. (which, if we remember correctly is why the Bok game plan changed to this tactic in the first place, elv’s made it impossible to protect your ball on attack)

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 42) : Awe schucks, I am starting to fear that all our pre-season depth has suddenly disappeared and we’re looking awfully vulnerable at the start of this season.

We only lost the Beast at the start of last season and that just about derailed our whole season, where exactly are we on the injury stats this year? 😯

  • @robdylan (Comment 43) : Totally understand…i saw them last year…but yes i can’t say that without the site(source) where i saw it… i take back my comments…I personally say he has shocking unforced error stats for last year 😉 3-5 unforced errors a game on average in Superugby…no doubt in my mind…

I watched a lot of rugby last year and IMO, Charl Mcloed and Nick Phibbs (Rebels) made a crap load of unforced errors and scrummie being the link between forwards and backs it has a big negative impact, imo.

  • Willem Alberts…with his shoulder and all i would use him 20 minutes off the bench from now on…Deysel/Coetzee/PSDT must share the rest of the 60 minutes…having Bissie back will also help…and lets not forget how big Frans is going to be for us this year. Steyn is the Blindside flank of the backline, he will surely get us going forward…also making use of JPP running off Pat will also be something we can do more often to get go forward ball.

It is a question that you not only have to pose about the players, but is the Sharks style of playing such a way that a player can only really perform that way for a season.

  • @robdylan (Comment 51) : All this talk of scrumhalves has made me very interested to see how some teams adapt to the new rule of having to get the ball out the ruck in 5 seconds.

The Sharks have also played a rather up tempo game so there might be one or two where the opposition team has reformed their defense that we might have to rethink, but it always seems as though scrummies like Francois Hougaard and Dewaldt Duvenhage seem to take an age to get the ball out for their own line to reform so their flyhalf can pound the ball as high into the air as possible.

New players are Wilmaure Louw,(Griquas), Espag, (Griquas), Herne (Kings), Ya Ya Hartzenberg (WP, Stefan Kotze (Cheetahs), Stefan Watermeyer (Bok 7’s/Bulls)and JW Bell (Valke).

I know the captain, Jonker is out for the season, but thye should be a good test for the Sharks, better than the blow out versus the Leopards anyway.
