The Cheetahs received a blow ahead of their overseas tour with the news that lock Waltie Vermeulen will not be able to make the trip.

Vermeulen, who appeared to sustain a nasty knee injury against the Sharks at the weekend, will not be out for as long as initially feared, though and should be all right to start playing again in a fortnight or so. His absence is a worry, though, especially given how poorly debutant Lood de Jager performed in the lineouts against the Sharks.

The Cheetahs are a little short on second row experience and had looked to Vermeulen as their primary lineout forward for the tour, hence the concern around his exclusion.

Griquas second rower Rynhard “Ligtoring” Landman will tour in Vermeulen’s stead.
