Another lifeline for Francis

Journeyman flyhalf Burton Francis looks set to pick up a game or two far the Cheetahs after all, as the next step in a career that has seen him play bit parts for the Bulls, Stormers and Lions, without ever really managing to establish himself anywhere.

The 26-year-old, who rose to prominence via the Bulls ranks before leaving (along with a huge number of other young flyhalves) a few years back due to lack of game time, was linked to the Kings earlier this year, but having failed to impress during his trial spell there, moved on to Griquas, where he was drafted into the wider Cheetahs Super Rugby group. Elgar Watts, though, was preferred as cover to Johan Goosen when the final group was named, but it’s a hamstring injury to the selfsame Watts that has now opened the door for Francis again.

Watts pulled his hammie in practice yesterday and Francis will, according to Beeld, fly out to join the side in New Zealand today.

  • He’s not a bad player to be able to call on. The Cheetahs have some good depth at flyhalf in their region.

Isn’t Francois Brummer also with Griquas?

  • @ChrisS (Comment 1) : Yes, Brummer is also contracted to Griquas, but he wasn’t flash in the warmup at all, so he is down the pecking order.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 2) : Not a bad player though. Glad to see that the flyhalf cupboard in SA isn’t as bare as during the nightmare years of 2000 – 2002!

  • So the Sharks jersey will be last one he needs for a fullhouse collection 🙄

  • @Viking (Comment 4) : He would never get the opportunity, at least six guys ahead of him in the pecking order.
