Ten-try Sharks bury Rebels

Records tumbled in Durban this afternoon as the Sharks finally showed some bite, scoring ten tries against the outclassed Melbourne Rebels in a 64-7 rout.

It was the first time the men in black have ever scored ten tries in a Super Rugby game – and the winning margin of 57 points also eclipsed their previous best victory by a good two converted tries. In short, the ideal way to bounce back after last week’s embarrassment by the Brumbies, even if the standard of opposition was nowhere near up to scratch.

The Sharks had a bonus point in the bag at half time, courtesy of a good try by Louis Ludik early on, followed by lineout drive scores from Marcell Coetzee and Jacques Botes. Captain Keegan Daniel nailed the fourth, with a strangely off-colour Pat Lambie missing two conversions, leading to a 24-0 halftime advantage.

In the next twenty minutes, though, the Sharks ran riot, scoring tries through Kyle Cooper, Cobus Reinach, Ryan Kankowski, Ludik again, Beast Mtawarira and Riaan Viljoen. Meyer Bosman, taking over the kicking in the second half, converted all but one of those scores and the only time the Rebels got into the game even a little was in the final quarter of an hour, with the Sharks losing structure as replacements came on. A late consolation try by Scott Higginbotham was all they had to show for their efforts.

Sharks (64): Tries by Louis Ludik (2), Marcell Coetzee, Jacques Botes, Keegan Daniel, Kyle Cooper, Cobus Reinach, Ryan Kankowski, Tendai Mtawarira and Riaan Viljoen. Converions: Pat Lambie (2), Meyer Bosman (5).

Rebels (7): Try: Scott Higginbotham. Conversion: James O’Connor.

  • Bosman, Cooper and PSDT just won starting places IMO.

  • I wonder what’s happening on the injury front after the game? Hope Cooper will be ready for next game, even line out time went better.

When will Butch, Bismarck, Alberts, Deysel and Whitehead be back?

This game must be huge for team confidence. Next fixture will be Crusaders in 2 weeks, won’t be easy.

  • @Poisy (Comment 6) : We had our biggest win and most tries wrapped up halfway through the 2nd half. After that the boys were just having fun! We had 7 different players pack down at flank (including Beast, who looked like he realy enjoyed it) Keegan played some at 9, 10 and 12. Charl and Frans snuffed some good attacks, but at that point we were just toying with a long dead mouse

  • @Die Kriek (Comment 7) : that in itself upsets me,we should have been ruthless start to finish no toying around we need to put away these weak teams and stop playing around, do you think the bulls or stomers would have done what we did honestly? because im sure they would have set up more targets in the game like reaching a ton and keeping them scoreless not toy around and be disrespectful to other teams

  • @Poisy (Comment 9) : Sadly our replacements (McLeod and Burden in particular) just had to drag the whole team down to their level.

Once Bismarck is back, I do not want to see Burden playing anything higher than VC and CC. McLeod should also start booking interviews to go play overseas.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 10) : yup mcloed needs to go now his very panicky about his play makes too many mistakes as well, our vd scrumhalf from yesterday should get a shot soon send mcloed to play vd,burden is one of my fav players im a big fan but his out of form at the moment, steyn needs to stop kicking away possesion if we not in our own 22 but big up to rest of the team that was some good rugby

  • @Poisy (Comment 9) : Have to agree! We talk of wanting a killer edge! Last night was a perfect opportunity to put up a century. It was still a good performance though.

  • We were scoring at around 1 point per minute. For 64 minutes. Which was great. Would’ve liked 2 more tries to get up to 78….. but looking at the bigger picture, saving and rotating key players is very important in this tournament. And with that will come some loss of momentum and structure, especially if you’re up 64 – 0

  • I am proud of the boys – I felt they did not stop playing untill replacements came on. I think that just scrambled the structure, so u cannot blame the players.

Cooper is just so cute man! So stoked for him. Also nice off-load by Coetzee and continuity in play to lead to that first try. Also thought Bossie had an excellent game. PSDT is YSTER!

I am happy – now 2 weeks to recover for a big match ahead.

  • These games are always difficult. They will always loose shape at some point, as everyone wants to get into the try scoring action.

However what was great to see was the much better support play, and players taking the ball up quickly through the middle when it was on. The back line still worries me though. I would expect a bit more from them in such a free scoring game.

I can’t see Burden starting again ahead of Cooper, and PSDT must be on the field. Bosman also showed his worth.

Looking to the Saders in 2 weeks – at least they should be without Carter.

  • I think that we played like we play when we have to win the last 4 games to stay in contention at the end of the tournament. And as we did it this early in the tournament – then we should do it every game, not just because we need to prove a point. They have now proved that they can pull magic out the bag, so keep doing it.

  • Let’s not get too excited until we manage to play this way against decent opposition. Great performance nevertheless. Can’t complain when we thrash the oppositiion, no mater who they are.

Some players didn’t pull their weight, though. Steyn, Coetzee, Jordaan and JPP looked totally disinterested. Fortunately Keegan, Kanko, Reinach, Bosman and PSdT were on fire.

If everyone clicks at the same time we’ll be hard to beat. As long as we remain under pressure to make the playoffs.

  • Bad opposition ,let be honest. But the general play was better ,Lambie looked good in loose player as did Steyn .

Most encouraging sight was seeing Frans side step opposition…

  • @Talent (Comment 22) : Oh yeah, Frans side stepping…in fact we didn’t once use the tried-and-failed crash ball.

We played like guys wise enough to know that they only have one body, best be smart in how you apply it. 😉

  • The last 15/20 minutes left a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth but the first 60 minutes had me smiling like an idiot!! 😀

I still think the backline needs some work – still a lot of our tries being scored by the bashing forwards. This always haunts us when we’re matched physically.

Crusaders in 2 weeks will give us a more relative perspective on where we stand.

Looks as if their 10 try defeat sent them spinning out of control.

Beale and Vuna were sent home after an alleged ” dust up ” saturday night.
