In a statement released by his family, it’s been confirmed that Bok flank Schalk Burger has contracted bacterial meningitis, further compromising his return to the field of play after more than a year on the sidelines.

Burger, who’s been on the injured list for over 12 months thank to a succession of knee and calf injuries, apparently contracted the bug during a surgical procedure he recently underwent, related to his most recent calf complaint. He will remain in hospital for the next fortnight as the disease is treated, before being discharged to continue with rehabilitation.

This latest setback delays his return to the game by at least another 6 weeks and pours cold water on any speculation that he’ll be fit to tour Australia and New Zealand with his team mates.

We’d like to wish Schalk and all his family well during this difficult time.

  • It’s dangerous to go to hospital nowadays. I know of quite a few people that went to hospital for minor procedures and ended up picking up a ‘superbug’ or something else. The misuse of antibiotics being the main culprit.

  • Ja sorry to hear. Get well soon. Think maybe it’s a sign for the big man to call time on rugby and do some farming with his dad.
