Frans Steyn set for flank switch (April fools!)

The Sharks have suffered a major setback in the blindside flank department with both Marcell Coetzee and Jean Deysel ruled out of Saturday’s clash with the Crusaders. With Willem Alberts also out with a long term injury coach John Plumtree was forced to use his ingenuity to come up with a solution to this particular injury crisis.

Sharksworld can exclusively reveal that Frans Steyn is due to wear the number seven jersey when the Sharks take on the Crusaders at the weekend. Coach John Plumtree said “Marcell Coetzee suffered concussion against the Rebels before the bye and he won’t be ready to play this weekend. We were hopeful that Jean Deysel would be ready but he unfortunately aggravated his ankle injury while fishing during the week off.” A major part of the Sharks’ gameplan is having a big looseforward bashing the ball up to get the team across the advantage line and gain momentum. Therefore Plumtree had to dig deep to ensure his loose trio had the necessary balance to take on the seven-time Super rugby champions.

Plum had the following to say: “I couldn’t sleep last night and so decided to go over the tapes of our previous games this season. I noticed Frans Steyn’s style of play, he just mindlessly runs into the nearest opponent. I realised that with his big frame and physical style of play that we had the perfect blindside flank for this weekend.”

Frans Steyn looked excited about the move and had the following to say about his switch: “I would play prop for the team if the coach asked me to. This change of position comes at a good time for me with Juan Smith having just retired and hopefully I can impress Heyneke Meyer enough to get a chance there for the Springboks.”

Steyn has no experience of playing flank but we do have to applaud Plumtree’s ingenuity of simultaneously fixing a few problems ahead of the Crusaders game. The Sharks have their ball-carrying number seven, Frans Steyn is playing and at same time the ball stands a better chance of making it to the wings than when Frans was playing inside centre.
