Marais brothers reunited for Sharks XV

Sharks XV coach Sean Everitt has named a mostly settled combination for Friday night’s Vodacom Cup clash against the SWD Eagles in George. Jandre Marais returns from his brief stint with the Super Rugby squad to partner brother Peet in one of a few changes to the starting pack.

Another player who missed out on the last game was open side flank Francois Kleinhans; a groin injury kept him out of action when the XV played Free State a fortnight ago, but he returns this week, meaning a move back to the bench for fellow Baby Bok Khaya Majola. Allan Dell’s front row merry-go-round continues, as he’s shifted to tighthead this week, with Danie Mienie starting at loosehead and Maks van Dyk benched.

In the only change to the backline that started the last match, Jaco van Tonder gets a start at wing in place of S’bura Sithole, who’s been bracketed on the Sharks bench. Among the substitutes, though, there’s a belated call-up for former Sharks under 21 scrumhalf Tian Meyer, who takes over from Stefan Ungerer in the number 20 jersey. Meyer was a star for the Sharks at age-group level, but has yet to represent the senior side in any competition after leaving to join the Pumas in 2010. Also joining the 22 this week is last year’s under 19 fullback and SA Schools representative, Sean Robinson.

Sharks XV:
15 Gouws Prinsloo, 14 Jaco van Tonder, 13 Marius Joubert (capt), 12 Heimar Williams, 11 Sizo Maseko, 10 Fred Zeilinga, 9 Hanco Venter, 8 Tera Mtembu, 7 Brynard Stander, 6 Francois Kleinhans, 5 Peet Marais, 4 Jandre Marais, 3 Allan Dell, 2 Monde Hadebe, 1 Danie Mienie
16 Franco Marais, 17 Maks van Dyk, 18 Johan Meyer, 19 Khaya Majola, 20 Tian Meyer, 21 Tyler Fisher, 22 Sean Robinson

  • Interesting to see Dell at tighthead. Also Tian Meyer on the bench. There is some excellent talent in this team.

  • @war1 (Comment 1) : in terms of scrummaging, that’s his strongest position, I reckon bringing Tian Meyer is sensible, get him familiar with the team considering he’ll lose both Venter and Ungerer for next week

  • SWD really good on defense. Our scrum is seriously battling. We chipped away for the last 6 minutes in their halve with them conceding penalty after penalty. Sharks tapped a few and kicked one for a 5m line out. Eventually bundling over in the left hand corner. Conversion by Zeilinga. 13 -12 Sharks halftime

  • Sorry. Very bad connection. SWD got another penalty and
moved up to 22 -16. Sharks started kicki g for field position morw often. Got a b’down penalty. 22 -19 sharks. What I thought was a silly kick by Zeilinga, was gathered by Joubert. B’down and we had a huge overlap to the left. Dell carried into contact a d offloaded excellently. Sean Robinson outpacing swd wwing and scored.

    26 -22 Sharks final score

  • We struggled to get rhythm. We knocked on, conceded penalties, kicked on the full, etc. Our scrum really struggled! !! When Maks v Dyk came on and Dell moved to loosehead, our scrums swemwd to stabilise, but only fractionaly. Van Dyk also conceding a penalty for scrumming up.
Our backline lacks creativity. Sharks tried to run every ball evwn in their own 22. Mthembu being 1st receiver after a lineout being very predictable. Only in the last odd 15 minutes did Zeilinga start to kick for field position out of their own 22 and did the sharks find some sort of rhythm.

Was not the nicest game to watch. Grinding my teeth and continuesly elbowing my daughter next to me. Which I was only informed of after the game qhen she said I need to relax in future otherwise she is staying at home 🙂

  • @JustPlainSHARK thanx for the scores. You sound a lot like me when watching rugby, nobody’s keen to sit next to me either and my kids know exactly how your daughter feels. Sharks had two tight games tonight, just glad they won both.
