Sharks prevail in thrilling game

There were no tries, but it didn’t matter one bit as the Sharks shrugged off an indifferent first half to beat the Crusader 21-17 at Kings Park.

After a bright start, the Sharks started to take a few steps back, with the early loss of Jacques Botes to a wrist injury appearing to rattle them. The Crusaders, in an uncharacteristically error-strewn performance, made yards at will without ever quite managing to open the floodgates as the Sharks continued to look out of sorts. A poor scrum gave them the space to score the game’s only try, through scrumhalf Andy Ellis, but it was Pat Lambie who benefited from some of ref Louwrens van der Merwe’s stranger calls to keep his side in the hunt.

Trailing by 9 points to 11 at the break, the Sharks were still well in, although nobody could quite figure out how.

The second half was a different story, though, with the likes of Kyle Cooper and Pieter-Steph du Toit coming into their own as ball carriers, holding possession and knocking the Crusaders back. Four penalties from Lambie were enough to get the hosts ahead, even though opposite number Blyendaal missed with two late shots, either of which could and would probably have seen his team hold out.

The last laugh belonged to Lambie and his cohorts, though, who held on and defended like trojans to record only their third win over these foes in 17 long years of Super Rugby.

Sharks: 21. Penalties: Pat Lambie (7).
Crusaders 17. Try Andy Ellis. Penalties Tyler Blyendaal (4).

  • Why is everybody being so negative about our performance? I thought we were ok in the first half – the Crusaders were just better. In the second we were by far the better team, playing attacking rugby. The refs calls were pretty abysmal both ways – he was oblivious to a lot of “clever” Crusaders tricks at the breakdown.

Finally paid off having the best ref in the world as a Sharks supporter – Craig Joubert knew that Louwrens would have sent off JP if he saw the replay and Craig didn’t give him the opportunity.

His defense (what defense?! 😡 ) is shocking. Every game he’s played this season his defense cost us at least one try.

Nee wat oom Odwa, tyd om jou togs op te hang.

  • A lot of supporters criticize John Plumtree as the coach of the Sharks. I just want to take my hat of for that super smart move by bringing Burden on for the last scrum, knowing that it will waste time and also unsettle the Crusaders pack. That was a coaching decision masterpiece.

    Well done Sharks

  • At the end of the day, the team with the forward momentum ultimately gets the benefit of those 50/50 (or 40/60) calls.

Once the SHarks had momentum on their side, the calls went their way. Many a time the Saders tacklers didn’t roll away and they got the penalty.

Louwrens should be given the Tahs vs Force vs Rebels games. He’s not ready to run with the big boys.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 13) : A little harsh on a Sharks stalwart who has never let us down – his hammy let him down for their try. That said, he is looking either under-cooked or a little past his best.

@SteelShark (Comment 14) : Haha, mostly those on Twitter and the SuperSport guys – who seem intent on crediting the Stormers for “roughing up” the Saders for us, yet failed to say the same of us when the Stormers beat the Brumbies.

And you’re right – van der Merwe is hopeless. His positioning is atrocious and he’s not far off Bryce Lawrence in the incompetence stakes.

  • I Always rated Wiaan Herbst. Today he showed that he has a lot of potential, with the Sharks scrum immediately improving ten fold when he came on.

PSDT should have been man of the match

Marcell Coetzee decided enough is enough in the second half and started tackling the shit out of Crusaders.

  • @MerckZ (Comment 19) : If players want to be remembered by their past successes, best retire before you’ve lost all form.

Odwa has been rubbish for the past 2-3 years already. He’ll be fine for CC rugby, but he should join Marius Joubert in the VC team, they can keep an eye on the kids and make sure the kids don’t break curfew 😈

  • Comment 21, posted at 05.04.13 21:35:18 by FireTheLooser Reply

  • @Mocho (Comment 20) : PSDT is the most rounded I’ve seen from a lock in a long time.

Lineouts, cleaning the ruck, securing the ball, tackling the guys backwards, attacking the gain line, getting over the gain line, not afraid of doing the hard yards, the list goes on and on.

Him and Bressler will make the complete combo for the Sharks second row.

A potentially great game spoilt by pathetic officials, Craig Joubert excluded.

Take the 4 points and sit pretty.

  • I don’t want to bash a player, but could somebody, anybody, please convince John Plumtree that Odwa Ndungane is no longer good enough to play in Super Rugby. I would honestly rather have Craig Burden on the wing. Hell, i’d rather have anybody. Worst defence ever. And he’s lost all his pace which was his only shining light.

The loudest cheer during the match in our house was when Odwa went off injured and Sithole came on!

Also, Lourens vd Merwe is shocking!

Other than that, great game and well played by most people. Great kicking by Lambie and nice to see JP finally getting the ball!! 🙂

  • @MerckZ (Comment 24) : It’s amazing how SA all of a sudden has the ability of producing world class youngsters just when it seems the glory years in a certain position is over.

First we were extremely thin on FH’s, then all of a sudden Lambie, Goosen, Jantjies, Pollard.

Then we ran thin on locks, now PSDT and Ysterbed. Sure is looking rosy for the future.

I was throwing my toys out the cot when the Crusaders wing rounded him on the outside, because it’s such an obvious flaw. I know S’Bura is struggling with his hands but hell, man, at least he can keep up with the play.

  • I still dont like our attacking tactics…seeking contact instead of keeping the ball alive, so very inaccurate. We will need tries against teams like the Chiefs, Reds and Canes, etc.

BUT much better attitude by the Sharks against a top team!!!

    Players that impressed/and or improved.
PSDT and Cooper; JP much better; Reinach better; Bosman was good again (@Saffex); Jordaan’s attack was better, despite getting smashed by the big guy; Lambie’s kicking was great, overall pretty sound but wouldnt mind a bit more adventurous play.

    Players that disappointed:

    – Steyn is still woeful and Odwa really does lack pace these days. Sithole has earned his shot

  • Geez a lot of ref bashing … But to be honest I don’t think he was terrible … He let a lot go and let the crusaders get away with a lot but the again we weren’t exactly angels either …
Really impressed that we have a couple of youngsters putting their hands up … After 2 decades of having world class hookers I was in the dulldrums at the beginning of the season.

True. The centres were very narrow on defence and Fransie was nowhere.

The same thing happened to JP a few times against the Brumbies, and people were also blaming him then.

Jordaan is a great athlete, but his distribution and defence still need lots of work.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 42) : True. Odwa has never been the fastest wing, but he is solid and consistent. Besides, if you know your wing is slow then you should force the attackers back in field, not bunch your centres and leave your wing with two to tackle in a corridor of 15 metres, especially from first phase possession.

I just watched that try again. Steyn was way too slow to get across as well.

I agree the breakdown was a mess and the Crusaders often joined from the side, but rarely did they really have influence our ball.

At least this ref reviews high tackles – especially when the linesman seem to have been sleeping the whole game.

I think credit needs to go to the young guys in our team. Cooper ,PSDT ,Herbst ,Coetzee and Lambie were all huge in their own roles but for me the unsung hero was Cobus Reinach! What a performance he had!!

  • Comment 48, posted at 06.04.13 13:04:48 by Talent Reply
  • @Talent (Comment 48) : Actually I had mixed feelings about Reinach. A couple of real great breaks, but also some poor kicks that simply handed over possession at a time when we hardly had any ball to play with.

  • Comment 49, posted at 06.04.13 13:12:56 by Bokhoring Reply
  • @Bokhoring (Comment 49) : he reminds me of a young spencer..will always have something up his sleeve, but consistancy doesn’t always create chances. The ability to make something out of nothing is what gives the team the edge. We would of sung reinachs praises if his chip chick bounced correctly and we scored that try. I think he needed a game like last night.
