It’s a real pity that the majority of Sharks fans won’t get to see much Vodacom Cup rugby this season, because my feeling is that we’re missing the emergence of a future superstar.

On a night where not much went right for the Sharks XV down in George, it was phenomenal young flyhalf Fred Zeilinga who, once again, kept a cool head and kicked the points needed to secure his side the unlikeliest of wins. Zeilinga nailed four penalties and two conversions to extend his own lead at the top of the Vodacom Cup points scoring table, in the process leading his side to a 26-22 win over SWD.

The Sharks XV remain one of only two unbeaten sides in the competition, but are only two points clear of the Pampas XV at the top of the South Section log; a testament to exactly how reliant they’ve been on Zeilinga and his boot thus far, as tries have been somewhat hard to come by.

The Sharks scored a try via Francois Kleinhans to take a slender 13-12 lead at half time, but went behind shortly afterwards as Mzo Dyanti struck back for the hosts. Zeilinga’s boot kept them close, before replacement wing Sean Robinson scythed through for the winner 9 minutes from time.

South Western Districts (22) – Try: Mzo Dyanti; Conversion: Jeff Taljard; Penalties: Jeff Taljard (5)
Sharks XV (26) – Tries: Francois Kleinhans, Sean Robinson; Conversions: Fred Zeilinga (2); Penalties: Fred Zeilinga (4)

  • It is wonderful that he is doing so well! Although Super Rugby is a different stage altogether. It is a testament to our great youth structure that so many of our young players are already making such a big impact at senior level! You think of Coetzee and Lambie who are already Boks, du Toit who is coming on in leaps and bounds, Jordaan is doing pretty well, nailing down a regular starting berth, and Cooper has been brilliant. Not to mention the good work Reinach has been doing and Herbst has also been great of late!

  • Let’s also hope we get Shaun Ardendorff back from Pta in the near future, he looks very promising..
