Taute setback for Stormers (and Lions)

While I haven’t yet seen it “officially” confirmed anywhere, the talk on the grapevine is that Bok Jaco Taute’s horror knee injury, sustained in Bloemfontein on Friday, will keep him out of action for at least 9 months.

The young utility back, on loan to the Stormers for the Super Rugby competition, hasn’t had the best of starts. Used by Bok coach Heyneke Meyer as a midfielder last year, Taute opted to rather establish himself in the lat line of defence for the Cape side, but struggled in his opening game against the Bulls. A horrendous boot to the ‘nads in that game saw him sit out for a few weeks, before finally returning to the starting line-up for Saturday’s ill-fated outing against the Cheetahs.

Whilst the Stormers can arguably absorb the loss of Taute, with the likes of Gio Aplon and Joe Pietersen equally adept at fullback, it’s the Lions, who ultimately hold Taute’s contract, who’ll be most impacted by this blow. After all, the key reason for loaning out their players to other teams was to keep them match fit and sharp, so they’d be ready for the all-important promotion-relegation series to be played later in the year. One thing that is now certain, is that Taute won’t play in those games for the Lions.

Given the noises that were made last year, it remains to be seen whether he’ll ever be spotted in a Lions jersey again.

  • My heart goes out to the poor guy; get well soon.

However, his decision-making at the Stormers has been very poor this season – I think the judicial officers should review the footage to confirm how he received those injuries.

  • The injury was truly cringe worthy! It looked hellishly painful.

Really a horror season for Taute. I hope we will see him back next year.

  • Taute is a quality player and its sad to see him out before he had time to settle with the Stormers. There is no reason why e wont see him next season, the question is, who will he play for.

Lets hope he does not buggar off overseas
