Sharks move fast to plug gaps

Word coming out this morning is that Lions players Jaco Kriel and Andries Coetzee have joined up with the Sharks squad this morning.

In light of the ongoing injury situation in the Sharks camp, with the likes of Jacques Botes (flank, broken arm) and Louis Ludik (fullback, shoulder surgery) the most recent to join the long-term casualty list, John Plumtree appears to be making moves to strengthen his squad ahead of their Antipodean tour, which kicks off in a fortnight. Despite starting the season with one of the strongest (and deepest) squads on paper, the Sharks have been thinned out alarmingly over the Super Rugby competition’s opening months, with no fewer than ten players currently unavailable from the 35 or so originally named.

Whilst efforts to blood youngsters from within the Sharks ranks have been ongoing and are admirable, the fact does remain that you can’t really expect to win Super Rugby with an entire squad full of young players; and given that virtually all of the injured are seniors, you can understand the thinking in wanting to loan a player or two with some Super Rugby experience, rather than pillage the Sharks XV ranks even further.

Kriel and Coetzee have been two of the more consistent performers for the Lions in recent years and will apparently “try out” with the Sharks squad this week, with a view to entering into binding loan agreements should they make the grade. Coetzee comes in as pretty much a direct replacement for Ludik, able to cover wing and fullback, but will also provide much-needed depth given the loss of Odwa Ndungane and Lwazi Mvovo. Kriel is clearly seen as a drop-in replacement for Botes, given the lack of players in the current Sharks squad specialised in the open-side role.

Do people not read, how can you possible expect to win SuperRugby with an entire team of youngsters who have all come up from your second team. Just bloody silly really. And I also think half of you don’t understand the words “loan” and “Trial” we not handing them the keys to bloody Durban! Just using them while players are injured. You don’t see that Hooker we loaned still here do you? No because we are using youngsters who had time to develop!!

Poor Skinstad couldnt keep the emotion out of his voice (ditto for the Stormers / Cheetahs game) and he then becomes very one eyed as to the mistakes the refs are making.

So basically we must give in to every play who demands to play or he will leave? And how many of those players who leave came from Natal originally? How many Natal schoolboys went to other provinces at the end of last year? We bring in players, we lose players. That is how Rugby works now day. If you want to support a team that “only develops local talent” support the kings, O wait….

  • @Poisy (Comment 41) : While I don’t claim there thinking will help the youngsters, I think the only thought going on right now is how can we win SuperRugby. And that is all that should matter right now. This isn’t the time to force in young players when you don’t have to. Currie cup is for that. Right now we must do what is best to win. Or do you want another nearly there year? And as for players getting fed up, look at Burdan and Botes, never ever the best players in the position, but they stuck around. As a player you have to realize some times that your not the best, there are better then you. You can ether give up, move on, or work harder. And at the Sharks there is only place for the players who chose option no.3.

If your problem is not with people being brought in from other provinces, and only with the fact that we should use young players who have worked hard, well then mate take a look. Here are two young players who have worked hell of hard and still had SuperRugby taken away from them but had it in them to stay with there union. Surely they deserve the chance just as much as any other hard working youngster if its not a problem their from another province?

I’m not sure what some people are getting their knickers in a knot about on this issue – if they are better than the existing options then they will strengthen the squad.
I’m not certain what the breakdown is at the moment but quite a few players who are now Sharks stalwarts did not come through the junior structures – that is the nature of professional rugby.
Off the top of my head current players Beast, Jannie, Wim Alberts, Jean Deysel, Botes, Charl McCleod, Tim Whitehead, Meyer Bosman, Louis Ludick etc all started elsewhere and I suspect that if these guys establish themselves in Durban they will be reluctant to leave.

Kriel is a handy openside flanker who made a good impression with the Lions last year.

Their inclusions are slap in the faces of the VC players, but only if the VC players are good enough to play S15 rugby.

  • @robdylan (Comment 63) : Top of the conference – we are really third on the log. In the end you have to aim for top 2 position to really win this thing, unless you are the Crusaders who could do it from 3 or 4.

We still have to tour with two tough games against the Chiefs and Reds. So not really the time to pat ourselves on the back on how the season went so far. So far so good, but lots of work to do.

My main gripe is simply why we never can seem to build on the previous year, but always seems to start from square one each year.

Once we win this competition we can raise Plum and co to untouchable status for a couple of months, but not before that 😆

  • Aaaah, another fun day on Sharksworld. lol, I love u guys. I’m rooting for plum though. I’d like to think that with every decision he makes, he has the team and the success of our union in mind. Sure not all the decisions are perfect (namely the whole franco over bresler thing) but ultimately he’s a great coach. Give the man till the end of the season before criticizing his decision making skills. Actually I take it back, our line outs were pitiful last year and it ultimately cost us the CC, and all though most of our success in the line outs has been credited to PSDT, we seem to totally overlook franco’s hardwork in the background coz he’s “not one of us” maybe this hard battle for bresler to make the starting 15 will do him good.

I like Gouws, check my comment yesterday. We already have youngsters in the team and agree with earlier posts, we can’t win this competition with a team full of youngsters that don’t have the experience. And yes, one gets experience through playing, however, this is a very difficult level where mistakes are not forgiven. Rather ease in the youngsters that have not 100% convinced the coaching stuff that they are ready to graduate from Vodacom Cup. The ff showed that ages ago: Marcell, PSDT, Kyle, Herbst, Lambie, Cobus, Paul, Monde… Andries is one of those youngsters.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 68) : thank you.

We have to remember that the coaches work with these guys EVERY DAY and know far better than we do which ones are ready to step up and which ones aren’t… yet.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 70) : I have no idea.

Is he related to Sean Robinson, who played fullback or our u19s all of last season?

  • @robdylan (Comment 71) : Incorrectly spelt his surname. It’s Robinson. Looks like he’s starting this against the Stormers. Any intel on him?

  • 😈 lol, remember me saying at the beginning of the season, how the Sharks supporters will be crying for plum’s head? many stout Sharks supporters ridiculed me, when I questioned the perceived superiority of the Sharks depth.

Now I am just sitting back and chuckling to myself.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 75) : Come on, you dont need to be a soothsayer to know that Sharks fans will at some point call for Plums head as well as some or other player that has a bad game and then has to prove that he (the player) is rehabilitated by first proving it on the field AND thereafter by walking on water.
