Super Rugby team of the week: Week 8

We had to wait all weekend for it, but the match between the Cheetahs and the Stormers lived up to its hype. For the Cheetahs it was another step in proving that they are strong contenders this year, for the Stormers however another lifeline was cut and they are probably now hanging on by a thread.

The Kings delivered another surprising performance to snatch victory from the table topping Brumbies and get away with an impressive draw and the Sharks did what they haven’t been able to do since they topped the Super Rugby table in 2007 and with their victory against the Crusaders held on to their conference lead.

In the New Zealand derby over the weekend the Blues came out with the win against the Highlanders, and the Rebels won against the Force, which messed up my SuperBru even further. There was no surprise when the Hurricanes won against the Waratahs.

The Sharks and the Cheetahs with their impressive victories during the weekend dominate our team with 5 sections each, 3 Kings players got the nod this week and the Stormers got 2.

15. Hennie Daniller

He’s always solid from the back, has a big boot and with his big frame is able to carry the ball from the back to set up clean ball for his team.

14. Willie le Roux

As the Cheetahs have had some bad luck with injuries to their fly halves, Le Roux has stepped in and taken more and more of that first receiver responsibility on his shoulders.

13. Juan de Jongh

He looked threatening with ball in hand, and only in his second week back from injury.

12. Robert Ebersohn

Pure class! His selection to the Bok squad is long overdue.

11. JP Pietersen

His best game of the year. He didn’t hang around waiting for the ball to come to him either, he made sure it did.

10. Patrick Lambie

His kicking was brilliant, but the way he can take control of a match is even better.

9. Cobus Reinach

Still a little rough around the edges, but certainly he has shown some glimpses of brilliance.

8. Cornell du Preez

Not only did he score the try to take the draw, he was huge in every carry throughout the match.

7. Wimpie van der Walt

He’s been good for the Kings all season, big on defence and strong with ball in hand.

6. Heinrich Brussow
South Africa has a shortage of out and out fetchers at the moment and Brussow highlights the importance of this role every time he steps on the field.

5. Andries Bekker

He was schooled by the Crusaders locks last week, but bounced back this week and put in a big performance in a losing cause.

4. Pieter-Steph du Toit

He’s taken his opportunity to feature in Super Rugby with both hands. The Sharks haven’t had such a strong carrying lock in a while.

3. Coenie Oosthuizen

Again he was used of the bench and made his impact.

2. Kyle Cooper

Injuries and strong opposition for his spot has kept him waiting on the side lines for way too long.

1. Schalk Ferreira

A yellow card tainted his performance, but the effort he put in on defence and his overall work rate, could not be overlooked.

International team:

15 Israel Folau, 14 Jason Woodward, 13. Adam Ashley-Cooper, 12. Robert Ebersohn, 11. Julian Savea, 10. Beauden Barrett, 9. Piri Weepu, 8. Cornell du Preez, 7. Ardie Savea, 6. Steven Luatua, 5. Ali Williams, 4. Hugh Pyle, 3. Angus Ta’avao, 2. Kyle Cooper, 1. Schalk Ferreira

We get it….you don’t rate Reinach. Jeez, the way you’re going on you’d swear Marius Joubert was back in the team. 😈

  • Reinach doesn’t have a bad pass, he made a couple of less than perfect passes, but he has a good accurate pass, most of the time.

  • Coenie who scrummed against the Stormers vs. Herbst who tamed the best in the business?

  • That side is more like it. I would have selected W.le Roux at 15, JP at 14 and Rhule at 11. Beast gets my vote at 1

  • @Saffex (Comment 8) : Personally through Herbst made more of an impact for the Sharks when he came on. I cannot recall a Crusaders scrum ever being manhandled like that.

  • @Uli (Comment 11) :

Sometimes when you think a player is playing badly you tend to focus on that player more waiting for little mistakes and you pick up every little thing that goes wrong. I’m like that with Frans Steyn at the moment. I know that Reinach has made some mistakes but not more than other players. Hell he was a lot better than Groom on the weekend.

If it was fair to rate a player on 5 minutes on the field then Sarel Pretorius would have been the 9.

  • Robert Ebersohn miles ahead of any 12 in SA at the moment. The Cheetahs have really improved their defence without sacrificing to much of their attacking play. They are a really exciting team at the moment.

  • Cheetahs getting a lil to much hype, I would say. When in SR I only support the Sharks. I want them to do well no other SA team. And watching that game I can not agree with the inclusion of so many Cheetahs players. If any1 the ref should be included. The cheetahs actually start winning for once and all of a sudden their the kings of rugby, while we forget who beat the 7 time champs.
