The loss of Jaco Taute and Elton Jantjies to injury has forced the Stormers into changes in the backline ahead of Saturday’s Newlands derby against the Sharks.

Joe Pietersen shifts from the right wing into the last line of defence, with Damian de Allende, a more regular centre, named to start in the number 14 jersey this week. Gary van Aswegen, who played off the bench last week, is promoted to the starting lineup and will wear the number 10 jersey vacated by Jantjies.

In the only unforced change, Nic Groom drops right out of the match 22 and is replaced by Dewald Duvenage. Louis Schreuder retains his bench spot as backup scrumhalf. Two new faces in Kurt Coleman and Cheslin Kolbe join Schreduer on the wood.

The forward unit is unchanged from last week’s narrow loss to the Cheetahs.

Stormers: 15. Joe Pietersen, 14. Damian de Allende, 13. Juan de Jongh, 12. Jean de Villiers (c), 11. Gio Aplon, 10. Gary van Aswegen, 9. Dewaldt Duvenage, 8. Duane Vermeulen, 7. Michael Rhodes, 6. Siya Kolisi, 5. Andries Bekker, 4. De Kock Steenkamp, 3. Frans Malherbe, 2. Deon Fourie, 1. Steven Kitshoff.
Replacements: 16. Martin Bezuidenhout, 17. Pat Cilliers, 18. Gerbrandt Grobler, 19. Nizaam Carr, 20. Louis Schreuder, 21. Kurt Coleman, 22. Cheslin Kolbe

  • Aplon at wing? Joe P at fb?
Damn wish Jantjies would play against us. His knock-ons would cum in handy

  • One has to ask what has happened to Ruan Botha, the Baby Bok lock that played a few S15 games for the Lions last year and was signed up by the Stormers. I take it he is injured

  • Sharks should have the edge, but then I also thought they would smash the WP in last year’s CC Final. Bugger will need to give this one some thought before making my picks.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 4) : typical problem you face when picking a Sharks result: Which team will turn up?

  • Saffa teams are doing themselves no favours at the moment. Too close in terms of quality maybe?

Wouldnt be surprised to see the log being Cheetahs, Sharks, Stormers, Bulls after this weekend.

  • Good for the Sharks to see Fourie at hooker and not open-side.

PSDT, vd Merwe, Bresler and Kanko must target the Stormers lineout – at least to disrupt them enough not to be able to set up their dangerous driving maul.

  • No chance. Might even give it a miss.

Stormers must be overwhelming favourites. 5 points in the handbag really.

Plus a prop at 15 and a 9 who cant cant pass.

Plus home ground advantage and this being a must win for them.

    @McLovin (Comment 15) :
Peaking at the right time. This could get ugly for us. 😥

  • I rate Damian de Allende!! He is big but he has a good rugby head on him too – he thinks about what he is doing and isn’t one dimensional like De Villiers.

  • @robdylan (Comment 8) : Baby Boks no.15 for this year I reckon, small player in the Aplon mould, very good 7s player as well. Good head on the young shoulders. Will be interesting to see him up against Sean Robinson at some point in the game. I thought they’d be the Baby Bok 15s this year, but Sean isn’t even in the squad
