Sharks coach John Plumtree has rung the changes for his team to face the Cheetahs this weekend with the biggest surprise being the inclusion of Jean Deysel in the starting line-up.

Riaan Viljoen starts in the place of Frans Steyn, who will have to feature off the bench, while Odwa Ndungane and Sean Robinson play wings while JP Pietersen is injured. The rest of the backline is unchanged.

Amongst the forwards, Deysel returns to the side of the scrum, replacing Ryan Kankowski, who is dropped from the match 22 altogether. The only other change is in the front row where Jannie du Plessis is given a break with Wiehahn Herbst getting a chance to start.

On the bench we see Tera Mtembu as loose trio cover while Lions recruit Andries Coetzee will make his Sharks debut should he come off the bench.

Sharks: 15. Riaan Viljoen, 14. Odwa Ndungane, 13. Paul Jordaan, 12. Meyer Bosman, 11. Sean Robinson, 10. Pat Lambie, 9. Cobus Reinach, 8. Keegan Daniel (Capt), 7. Jean Deysel, 6. Marcell Coetzee, 5. Franco van der Merwe, 4. Pieter-Steph du Toit, 3. Wiehahn Herbst, 2. Kyle Cooper, 1. Tendai Mtawarira. Substitutes: 16. Craig Burden, 17. Jannie du Plessis, 18. Anton Bresler, 19. Tera Mtembu, 20. Charl McLeod, 21. Frans Steyn, 22. Andries Coetzee

  • the team is too light at outside center and wings.
I wonder how many games KD gets to playing without being dropped?

  • This team bothers me a bit, but am a bit more confident than last week. My biggest concern is if Odwa will be able to keep up the the Cheetas’s wings? And hopefully Robinson will be more relaxed this week to make a telling confirmation. I see on the Sharks website that Plum said they got Piet Lindique from the Lions?

So what happens to Kanko – plays for the Vodacom team this week?

Vodacom Cup again for a while before he will sit on the bench before getting dropped after a single poor performance.

Let’s hope they treat him better

  • Hey we still don’t have even one flanker in this team. Keegan 8, Deysel 8 (except if I’m mistaken, not so sure on this one… okay so he’s probably played 7 for longer than he has 8 now, so i’ll give them that one), Marcell 8, Mtembu 8, and what about Alberts 8 and Kanko 8… Did any of these guys play 6 or 7 before they came to the Sharks.

    That’s messed up.

I would be very surprised if this side performs any better than the one that played against the Stormers, they could still win, but they’ll do all the same things.

Glad Deysel is back though, if he’s back, it should help a little.

Maybe Viljoen will score one of those tries that he always scored against us when he played for the Cheetahs.

So Kanko is dropped cold. Nice. Did he say something to Plumtree that pissed him of, like – “Maybe if you play a more balanced loose trio we’ll be able to do what we’re supposed to do, more effectively?”

Whatever, I think this was the last straw for me.

I’ve been clinging onto my pre-season hopes until now, but i think I just lost it all at once with this team announcement and Plums comments in the media earlier this week.

  • @Stu (Comment 10) : Andries Coetzee is the very promising young fullblack that started playing for the Lions last year.

When Lambie plays at fullback, they’re kind of the same player – that’s the best compliment I can give him. He also played flyhalf before playing for the Lions and is the same build as Lambie.

He’s also very calm and mature on the field. Nothing erratic and reads the game very well.

Great potential, sad that no super rugby team picked him up for this season.

  • What a crap side. Plum has lost the plot. This has to be the worst Sharks backline I have seen in years. Its worthy status ends at 10.

The real issue is a piss poor midfield, where Bosman is a liability and adds nothing with ball in hand. Jordaan is the flop of the season.

In the forwards, we see the average Franco v/d Merwe retained week after week, despite adding nothing of value to the Sharks, apart from the odd line-out ball.

This is a poor Sharks side, in particular the backline where Viljoen, Robinson, Ndungane and Bosman are not S15 standard. Add to that Jordaan who is failing to make an impression at 13.

Does Plum really think this bog ordinary backline is going to make an impression?

  • @Saffex (Comment 21) : I agree that Jordaan has not yet filled his potential this year… who to replace him with though?

Bosman has been good in the 2 games he started.

Franco in my opinion is doing a lot in helping steadying our line out. The only change since CC Final 2012 is him, so that’s my conclusion and therefore I support his continued inclusion.

Viljoen will be no better than Steyn, although, I have to say he looked good in the warm up games, but then so did Steyn and the rest.

Odwa is our only experienced wing left, you couldn’t include 2 rookies on the wing.

I don’t know Robinson’s potential, but I’m rooting for him.

I get the distinct impression that you have two issues with the Sharks, and that you have nothing else to add?!

You stated Bosman is bad and Jordaan a flop – piss poor midfield – said on every thread for the past few days. We get it.

Franco is a has been – we get it.

Marais should not have been allowed to leave – yawn!

If you have anything else to add, feel free to raise a new opinion. You do not seem to have the capacity to think up anything new.

Lambie’s taken a Heyneke to the head and stands too deep and goes to his boot too quickly. If he were to get a little closer and play flatter the Sharks might be able to score tries again.

If you read a posting, and its negative, nobody can play decent rugby, and Bosman is the worce rugbyplayer ever etc. you can look who post the comment and …….. Saffex. You must have a problem somewhere. Nobody can do something good in your eyes. Look of the stats last week and see who did the most tackles, who steal the most balls?

  • @Letgo (Comment 23) : Given JP is injured there is little option but to retain Jordaan at 13, although I would love to see Baby Bok Tyler Fisher getting a run at 13.

Bosman has been poor, he is an ordinary player who has no creativity or flair so brings nothing to the Sharks backs at 12. Inside centre is your most important position in the backline, you cannot penetrate with ordinary at 12.

What exactly is Franco doing to steady the line-out. You dont select a lock who only adds marginal value in the line-outs. The game has moved on. Franco adds nothing in general play, you never see him on the charge, making tackles or clearing out rucks. He is hardly a physical brute, so its a given that he adds no grunt to the scrum, evidenced by the fact that the Sharks scrum has struggled at times this year.

Ndunagne, is too slow for S15 rugby and Robinson looked physically out of his depth last week.

I dont rate Viljoen at all. Andries Coetzee on the bench is a quality player, he should have started at 15, with Frans at 12

  • @Saffex (Comment 28) :

You have no clue, do you?

If you think Robinson looked physically out of depth on the wing, what do you thing the big centres will do to an underage Fisher?

Frans will not add anything in midfield as he is as mobile as a slow hooker and does not pass a ball. Jordaan will look even worse with Frans inside him.

Franco’s value is in training, where he has single handedly improved the Sharks line-out, and is the best line-out option at the moment.

As for Bosman, he is doing what he is told, is holding onto his tackles and can only put Jordaan away so many times, until Jordaan can do the basics right, it doesn’t matter if you put SBW inside him, he will struggle.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 31) : I said Robinson looked physically out of his depth. That is hardly going to be the case given the size of Fisher now is it?

Ah wow Franco adds value in training – good one, when last were games won in training – and you are a rugby man???

There has never been an issue with Frans’s pace at 12 in the past, why should there be an issue now. One would swear Bosman was quicker. In Frans’s first game of the season at 12, he showed exactly what we require at 12. He beat the first defender with a step, took contact and offloaded perfectly – that happened twice in that game. He followed that match with another good performance at 12. Thereafter, against the Kings and Brumbies, his game along with the rest of the Sharks side took a big dip.

Bosman is and always will be a bog ordinary player. He is not gifted enough to make a difference to a side. If ordinary and solid is all you want at 12, then fair enough play Bosman, but dont expect to challenge at the business end of the S15, with solid at 12

    Fisher and Coetzee?
So with all the injuries and lack of experience, you’d bring in a very young player at wing who is actually a 13? In the pouring rain? Where an aerial bombardment is likely and the fullback will need all the help he can get. A fullback that has only arrived at the Sharks last week?

Don’t get personal, you guys shouldn’t dig into each other.

Rich makes valuable contributions to this site and I can’t really speak for the rest here, but you insults towards him is not something that I would just let go.

Guys we’re all frustrated, but we need to speak with more respect.

Even about the players. There’s a difference between calling out a players weaknesses and just calling them useless.

As a fan, this is really concerning… It shows that there is no structure or clear decision making coming from the squad. Which is reflecting on the field.

  • @Saffex (Comment 69) : Bosman is the only player in that backline worthy of his place at this moment.

But we`re out of options so I guess this is it.

Regarding FS, if we`re not gonna give him any responsibility to kick and contribute according to his strengths, he might as well not start at all.

I hope I`m wrong but I think this is where we kiss our SA log leader status goodbye. 🙄

You seriously need to calm down. I read through your comments, and see they are good rugby comments with some insight and ideas, but the way you get it across annoys a lot of people. Probably a lot of built up aggression going on there, and when I look at your profile pic, you seem like a decent oke…

  • So does everyone believe my MANAGENT THEORIES NOW???

    – Kanko was the only loosie who played well for the first 6 weeks. No it wasnt spectacular, but no one has looked spectacular in these performances. was practically the only player on the park vs Brumbies and Kings.

NO ONE (except Saffex) can justify keeping Frans Steyn in the squad over Kanko even if theyr different positions…

    6. Keegan/Botes
    7. Coetzee/Deysel/Alberts
    8. Kanko

Any combo of the above has consistently been our best over a period of 5 years…and Plum doesnt know this??

What disturbs me is that Captain Keegan doesnt have the insight to say something / or will to say what he thinks.

  • @Saffex (Comment 77) : Well that`s an easy one.
Bosman defends, retains possesion and actually does a lot better job fetching than our flankers.
As long as we`re without Botes, and while Plum gets his head around starting Kriel or even Kleinhans, Bosman is all we have standing between us and zero possession this weekend.

Brussouw must be relishing this opportunity. 🙄

  • @Saffex (Comment 69) : But don’t. This is a blog. Some thought needs to go into what you write and if you actually thought about what you wrote before you wrote and posted, you’re not being very nice.

By the way, if you didn’t come of that aggressiveness you might realize that some of us agree with you.

Rob for example has not once given Franco a good rating in his player ratings and has made it clear how he feels about Franco keeping our young guys on the bench, I’m sure others agree with you too.

I feel Frans Steyn should be in the midfield … I do not however feel it should be at the expence of Bosman at this stage, but rather Jordaan, until Timmie gets back, or Steyn looks better in his passing.

None of us think Odwa is playing great rugby at the moment, it’s just hard to justify playing two young guys on the wings, when you’ve just lost your entire back three.

I agree Andries Coetzee is talented and should add value to this team, but think, especially given all the other changes in the back three we need to give him time to settle into the Sharks environment.

See what I mean, since your argument always start with – You don’t know what you’re talking about or you’re obviously clueless.

People don’t even give notice to the rest of your argument.

Here’s my advice, just start with – I disagree with you. We won’t force you to see everything like we do. And actually enjoy a couple of good arguments. As long as you can show your respect to all the other bloggers here.

    Get what I’m saying.

  • I honestly think Kanko is on much better form than Coetzee. If anything I think Marcell should have been benched for this match. I don’t think I would have dropped Steyn. I would have kept him at fullback and played Viljoen on the right wing (where he did play sometimes for the Cheetahs). Other than that, I would have Bresler in for van der Merwe. If you guys want, check out my predictions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqXsl5cB–E
