Oh man, I’m kind of chuckling as I write this… It seems that only three months with the Bulls and Tukkies coaching staff were enough to turn centre Piet Lindeque into a Super Rugby quality player – something which the Sharks themselves seemingly couldn’t get right in three years.
Information is sketchy at best, as the “veil of secrecy” culture in Durban means that nothing has been released relating to Lindeque’s return, save a single throwaway comment from John Plumtree. Rumours picked up yesterday, though, have turned out to be true and the former Grey College superstar, who enjoyed a frustrating period with the Sharks juniors over three years, has been training with the Sharks squad this week and may perhaps even come into contention for a tour place.
Lindeque left Durban at the beginning of the year to join up with Tukkies after the Sharks failed to offer him a senior contract. It seems that some good performances at outside centre for the Varsity Cup champions have been enough to prompt a change of heart for coach Plumtree, but we of course have no clue what this means for Lindeque going forward.
Just another farcical development on a truly farcical day for Sharks rugby.

I think Winston Chruchill was referring to the Sharks not Russia when he said “I cannot forecast to you the action of Russia. It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma….”
This whole attitude needs to be changed. The union needs to be more open with the supporters. I hope this changes over the next 12 months.
@slammerboy (Comment 1) : LOL!!!
True that.
I have to ask.. WTF Sharks management? do they themselves even know about this?
Speaking of centres joining the Sharks does anyone know about Kevin Lerena who moved to the union earlier this year? What is this guys involvement within the Sharks?
@slammerboy (Comment 3) : he’s with the Bulls now….
That boy seems to like blowing his own trumpet…. who knows if he actually plays rugby at all.
Still in disbelief here, I wonder how Lindeque must be feeling, he must’ve had a good laugh after they called him. It must be said the Sharks don’t have the greatest record of producing great centres. You only have to look at Heimar Williams to see that
I always thought he deserved a shot. He was promising. I know we can’t contract everyone but he had such potential.
Perhaps with Barney in charge there won’t be so much secrecy and shenanigans going on at the tank.
The Sharks do have a history with centres……Waylond Murray never found favour at the Sharks. He was injury prone, but a useful centre all the same.
We now see Frans discarded from 12
I was bowled over by John Smits appointment as CEO – just what the doctor ordered. A few years ago John Plumtree was coaching him now he’s the Boss. In fact several guys still there were playing next to him!! But can he do what is needed. Strip down and overhaul a rugby union side that has bottomed out? And seems alarmingly to be fracturing and splitting at the seams. Hoff – stick around, things can only get better.
@Saffex (Comment 7) : Waylon Murray is talented but he was made to look much much better by Barritt. He never really found his groove again after Barritt left.
@Saffex (Comment 7) : Waylon Murray played over a hundred games for the Sharks (Currie Cup and Super) so to say he never found favour is absolute total rubbish.
