Injuries: unfair to blame the medicos…

Injuries – the curse of any contact sport. As the seasons get longer and the collisions get more intense, so the toll on the human body becomes harder to bear. Conditioning, strapping, ice, magic spray and a whole lot of hope and prayer can only get you so far at the end of the day, because ultimately, the consequence of quite so much high-intensity rugby is inevitably going to be injury – with often lengthy lay-offs the result.

In the article I wrote a few days back, I was pretty scathing in my criticism of the way the current “injury crisis” within the Sharks camp is being managed. I’d like to revisit that, if I may and perhaps undo some unintentional damage that may have been caused.

The fact is, I really never meant to suggest that Sharks medical team – or the new team doctor, Alan Kourie in particular – are in any way not coming up to scratch in the way they’re dealing with the injured players. The fact is, the Sharks currently have an unprecedented injury situation to manage and that, as far as I’m concerned, is a direct result of a combination of too much rugby and bad luck, rather than anything that the medics are or are not doing.

What I did suggest – or at least mean to suggest – was that due to the unfortunate timing of Dr Ewoudt van der Linde’s resignation and replacement by Dr Kourie, there may have been less time than we would have liked for the medical team and the management team to “find each other” and ensure a sensible flow of information. This is nothing to do with Dr Kourie and his team at all – like I said, I know they’re doing the best they can under very difficult circumstances – but everything to do with the flow of information from the medical team, via the management team and the Sharks admin, to the media and the fans.

The good news is that I’ve had an open chat with the Sharks about this issue and we’re going to work together to try and make things a little clearer in the future. That, I’m sure, will lead to a far happier situation for everyone concerned.

Again, sincere apologies to Dr Kourie and his team if I inadvertently created the wrong impression about the job they’re doing to get our boys back in shape as quickly and safely as possible.

  • @Uli (Comment 1) : They need to learn to walk it off…instead of taking a seat next to the field with ice, take a walk around the field, it’ll fix everything 😆

That and off course water, as you said. 😆

  • I think 80% of the injuries have been bad luck…broken arms and hands, twisted ankle or knee…that’s bad luck. Chronic Injuries like Alberts’ shoulder is one you can definitely put down to too much rugby last year…the ball carriers in SA Rugby need to be managed a lot better, we have many big men that can get you over the advantage line, we need to start sharing the workload.

  • @robdylan (Comment 10) : So can we also expect an article telling us why Plum is the best coach in the business.

Were they willing to fly you to Durban for a personal tête-à-tête, ala the Joburg Stormers supporters club chairman?

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 11) : no…. we haven’t got quite that far.

I stick by what I said about Plumtree’s sub-par player management

  • “@Uli (Comment 1) : Uli, I’m stopping short of blaming him outright…. the Sharks medical team used to be a well-oiled machine and it doesn’t seem to be functioning that way right now.

Kourie really had no time to get familiar with the setup though and was thrown straight into the deep end. I feel for him.”

QUITE FRANKLY I CANT SEE HOW ANYONE COULD HAVE TAKEN OFFENSE. As you clearly stated in that comment on the other article…

  • @robdylan (Comment 12) : Rob that’s an understatement. Plum has been an awful man manager this season. His handling of the Frans Steyn and Kanko situation have left a lot to be desired. The sooner he goes the better.

Hopefully the guys pull together tomorrow, score a few tries in the process and beat the Cheetahs giving themselves some confidence before heading down under
