Touring Squad

So Ryan Kankowski has been left out of the 26-man touring squad for the Sharks. Williem Alberts is another player who has been left out, although he is over his injury and expected to play a part in this weekends Vodacom cup match.

Kankowski’s exclusion comes after coach John Plumtree has been reported to say that the player is out of form after coming back from Japan and that the situation is frustrating for everyone involved. No one can say that Kankowski has been setting the Super Rugby scene alight this year, but then the question must be, which of the Sharks forwards have, or even just played to their own potential.

The Sharks have  included Lions trio Derick Minnie for the touring squad, which must then be a direct replacement for the “out of form” Kankowski and although he might have a good impact, one wonders if losing faith in your own for a loan player would be in the best interest  of the team.

Andries Coetzee and Piet Lindeque are two other players who have been drafted into the sqaud. Lindeque played for the Sharks at age group and showed great potential, but was not offered a senior contract by the Sharks given the depth the union build up in this position over the past year or so. A few injuries in this area, as well as players struggling with form has prompted the Sharks to call up the young center from the Bulls Vodacom cup side, before that Lindeque played for Tukkies in their victorious varsity cup campaign and made a good impression. Coetzee was drafted from the Lions and showed great potential at fullback last year.

JP Pietersen, although he will not be involved in the match against the Cheetahs this weekend, has also been named in the squad and will hopefully recover from his ankle strain to make an impact on tour where the sharks will be playing the Chiefs, the Highlanders, the Reds and the Force.

The Sharks have named a couple of young players in this squad. It will be great to see Allen Dell, Lubabalo Mtembu and Sean Robinson given a few opportunities on tour. Lindeque is another player who could, given a chance proof to the Sharks that he is good enough to be given a contract.

The Sharks touring squad is:

Forwards: Anton Bresler, Craig Burden, Marcell Coetzee, Kyle Cooper, Keegan Daniel (captain), Allan Dell, Jean Deysel, Jannie du Plessis, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Derick Minnie, Wiehahn Herbst, Tendai Mtawarira, Lubabalo Mtembu, Franco van der Merwe.

Backs: Meyer Bosman, Andries Coetzee, Paul Jordaan, Patrick Lambie, Piet Lindeque, Charl McLeod, Odwa Ndungane, JP Pietersen, Cobus Reinach, Sean Robinson, Francois Steyn, Riaan Viljoen.

  • Piet Lindeque is from the Blue Bulls not the Lions. I don’t know why the media reports list him as a Lion

  • I have to admit, even though the exclusion of Kanko came as bit of a shock and as explained by Plum, makes no sense.

I feel it is the best move, if he wasn’t going to get that much game time anyway.

If our conspiracy theories aren’t correct – and that’s all we can go on, since Plum or at least everything written of what plum has said, has not been very clear – we can also assume that Plum have spoken to the players and that there is a clear understanding between player and coach, and that they both agree that it will be best for Ryan to stay home and get stronger, back to full fitness and his best form.

I just feel that it’s setting a bit of a double standard, as Frans Steyn is clearly still out of shape. Maybe Plum feels Fatfrans can still add value with strong carries in the backline.

The thing is we have to guess, since now one will tell.

  • Really disappointed in this decision. I wonder when Kanko’s contract comes to an end… If Jacques Engelbrecht heads up to the blue horns, I can see Kanko moving down the coast.

  • @Letgo (Comment 6) : Maybe.

Anyway, I like the statement on the Sharks web site that Minnie is like “Jean Deysel and Keegan Daniel rolled into one” 🙂 although I think he is a penalty liability in tight games

  • @Butchie34 (Comment 7) : I can see Kanko going to Europe or permanently to Japan, he turns 28 this year. He gave his best years for the Sharks, he deserves to go.

I just want to add again, the reason we’re up in arms, is because the information coming out of the Sharks camp aren’t clear and concise, so we have to make things up to fit the picture.

  • @Letgo (Comment 5) : Maybe he sees it as a situation in which he has no choice but to take Chubby Steyn. It might be a situation in which it would be Pat Lambie and then a bunch of unknowns outside him.

  • @Butchie34 (Comment 10) : Shame, I don’t like calling the guy fat.

I agree that he shouldn’t have gained the weight, but apparently he’s working really hard to shake it of and get back in tip-top shape. He did in fact already lose 12KG’s or something like that.

Anyway, i think Plum took Steyntjie, because there’s no one else to cover Bosman at 12.

Mtembu is a good cover, and Minnie will add value.

I hope Kanko does use this time to build some muscle and get right back into the team when the guys return, to win the last four games with bonus points for us.

  • @Letgo (Comment 11) : Neither do I, that’s why I called him Chubby! 😉 But that’s just semantics.

  • Guys let me be the first to say what gets said every year at the Sharks, “There is always next year”!!! You cant justify Plums comments when you compare his form to that of Coetzee (stampcar) and Daniel (sidestep into two people). We all agree he isnt at his best (no one can be the way the collective is performing) but he certainly wasnt the worst.

Sorry for the dampener but facts are facts. I will go so far as too say if Plum had dropped Kanko and said “I just dont like him” then we wouldnt be half as pissed off!!!

I wish the boys the best as always and I will be at Suncorp with my Sharks flag but I hold little confidence…

  • @Letgo (Comment 9) : …”I just want to add again, the reason we’re up in arms, is because the information coming out of the Sharks camp aren’t clear and concise, so we have to make things up to fit the picture.”

How much more clear and concise must they get than this.

“Ryan Kankowski is not in good form at the moment. We are still putting a plan in place for him going forward, but I think he’s still feeling the effects of the Japanese season, he still hasn’t come right. He, himself, is battling to work out what’s going wrong, it’s not easy for him or anyone of us. Right now he’s struggling and how he gets back to the required levels will be interesting to see, but it is alarming for me as well because he’s one of our better players. ”

The thing is that everyone goes off on a tangent stating things as fact when all they are doing is thumb sucking and making it up as they go along. All the conspiracy theories may have some truth in them but until someone can actually confirm them and be willing to do it with the same conviction that they rubbish the union then it will actually have no substance.

  • @Uli (Comment 15) : Why?

Have you every heard of … Patrick Lambie / Fred Zeilinga / Meyer Bosman / Butch James

He will just be warming the bench with the Sharks and keeping a very talented young flyhalf like Zeilinga from his opportunity to shine.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 17) : It’s not clear why Plum has singled Kanko out as the only player that has been struggling, when it is clear that neither Marcel nor Keegan has looked so good.

And Mtembu though a good young talent can’t be expected to do much better with this bunch.

So just saying that a player is out of form, and that the player agrees, and that everyone’s frustrated – is not very clear.

You would have to say how you could justify dropping a Springbok for a “rookie” and not giving the same treatment to many of the other players in the squad.

Just be clear. Did kanko ask to be left behind to work on his game? Did they discuss it and come to an agreement. Or was it just like – “You’re not good enough, so cheers till later”?

It’s just – the player is out of form, he knows it, it’s frustrating, he won’t be touring with us.

    Where’s Whitehead & Mvovo?

  • Even if he is out of form, he should still go on tour. The squad is lacking in senior players and his presence will go a long way in keeping the right culture. Especially when away from home.

It seems very strange how someone can go from starting 15 to out of the whole touring squad.

Most of the other guys are expected back second leg of the tour … not that we can use them, unless there’s injuries.

Alberts, Bissie, Butch, Botes and Chadwick are about to come back, should see them getting involved with the Vodacom Cup side in the next few weeks.

  • So what will Kanko do while at home? The statement mentions that it is a form issue. I do recall there were conditioning issues at the start of the season. He does not look that unfit to me at the moment – so is it a strength issue?

If he is out of form he needs game time, and not just conditioning. So I hope he is included in the Vodacom cup squad then.

It would be great if Plum actually said what the plans would be to “rehabilitate” Kanko

  • I have no idea how many breaks they have in the Japanese season, but Kanko basically played Super rugby, jetted off to Japan, and then came back for a little more Super rugby. He wasn’t properly conditioned as the Japanese league isn’t as physical but probably a little faster. My thoughts is that he should’ve been rested for at least the first 4 weeks to firstly condition, and also to take a mental break.

Unfortunately the Sharks had an injury crisis that went from bad to worse. Buy him a ticket to Seychelles or somewhere, and give him time to recharge. Rugby isn’t just a physical game, it’s also a mental one.

  • @robdylan (Comment 31) : No, no … I should have added this season to that sentence, he could be out for the rest of the season. He would have been ready Round 8, then Plum told media that the break didn’t heal properly, because the stitching wasn’t done right (or something) so it seemed like he might have to go back into surgery to fix that and the healing process will start over, another 8 weeks… so round 16 or out for the season, but I have to say that’s more what I took from the bits and pieces that was said … Plum also said he hopes Tim will be ready for the second half of the tour.

    So really mixed reports.

Yet again Jandre Marais gets ignored.

Lets hope Lindeque gets some game time, as by all accounts the lad has huge potential and Jordaan is not working out at 13.
