Further blows for battered Sharks

The Sharks departed for their four-game tour of the Antipodes yesterday with a depleted squad, as injury continues to cut a swathe through their title aspirations. Smarting after a home loss against the Cheetahs that they could ill afford, three fresh injury concerns over the weekend mean the squad that left Durban contained only 23 players.

Key among the concerns is at loose head prop, where Beast Mtawarira became just the latest in a long line of Bok casualties when he picked up a calf injury against the Cheetahs. The big Zimbabwean is expected to be out of action for around a month; adding to the concern though is the knee injury sustained by replacement Allan Dell. Dell was injured in the Vodacom Cup game against EP on Saturday and it’s been confirmed that he too will miss the tour, with an MCL injury that will keep him out for up to two months.

With neither Mtawarira nor Dell in the tour group, the Sharks have no loosehead props available for this weekend’s game against the Chiefs.

The situation in the back three is hardly better. On-loan Lions utility back Andries Coetzee enjoyed a bright first run-out against the Cheetahs, before appearing to dislocate his shoulder in a horror incident towards the end of the match. He has not joined the tour either, while another winger, JP Pietersen, is on the plane, but not fit to play against the Chiefs.

We expect an official announcement regarding replacements to be made soon.

  • Jc and Cj at prop would be my guess:)

  • I did actually feel the incident where Coetzee was injured warranted a yellow card or at least a penalty. You can’t have players just running out the legs from a guy in the air. I though the Cheetah player made no attempt to jump for the ball.

  • @skull (Comment 1) : I though JC is off to France?

  • So the rumour is that JC was asked, but is currently in France for a medical. May join the team ahead of the Highlanders game.

We’ll have to start with Wors at 1 this weekend. Not sure what we’ll do for a bench prop

  • The Sharks will have to have a prop on the bench. Who will that be? I hope they not expecting Cooper to fill that role against the Chiefs.

  • Feel really bad for Coetzee. Would like us to sign him if JPP leaves.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 7) : we only have 2 hookers on tour, so picking Cooper at prop won’t help

  • The Cheetahs were so dirty and illegal at the breakdown, it was unbelievable!!!
Overall it was a shocking rugby match. Both teams making too many errors.
The referee was shit and mainly against the Sharks. The last 5 minutes of refereeing was laughable:

    – The advantage law applied was completely wrong and cost us a try. How can u say “advantage over” when we have the ball 30 metres behind where the knock on occurred to give us the advantage. JOKE!!!

    – Coenie coming from an offside position on that great break by Jordaan. Penalty advantage and a yellow card as we were 5 metres out.

The Cheetahs played shit. They won on our error and the refs error and kicked and charged all the time.
The Sharks actually tried to play rugby and big up to them for backing themselves in shitty weather.
I am still confident we can get at least 2 wins overseas.

  • @CPT Shark (Comment 11) : you are wrong…. the Sharks had the ball in space with plenty of options. That’s advantage. The law does not say that you have to cross the advantage line for advantage to have taken place.

Regarding the Oosthuizen one, I also thought it was offside at the time. Would need to see it again to be sure.

Let’s be straight though. We lost this game all on our own. We didn’t need the ref to help.

  • @CPT Shark (Comment 11) : Great attitude!

After this weekends loss and the injuries tacking up, I’m not as confident anymore.

  • @robdylan (Comment 12) : Coenie wouldn’t have been offside if the ball coming from Jordaan was tackled ball only. The question is, did a second Sharks player join the tackle to make it a ruck? If not, Coenie was in the right.

I realise the law does not say, but common sense says, playing advantage 30 meters behind where the error occured, when the Sharks just wanted to play the ball within penalty range is a bit ludacris, it should never have happened, but I suspect a better captain and or leaders would have pointed that out to the ref before making that pass.

When Robinson was taking that kick up from the back, I kept yelling out, just take the damn scrum … Scrum penalties happens a lot against the defending team and if we didn’t get a scrum penalty, we could still have had the ball 35 meters out.

  • Was sort of hoping they’d take Zeilinga on tour. Maybe a different FH might just unlock our Stormer-like attack this season

  • @robdylan (Comment 12) : I would say had the Sharks just put their hands up and said, we want the scrum and the ref had given it to them… we had a pretty good change of taking the game from their. We were holding onto the ball pretty well at that stage, but just couldn’t get on the right side of the field, I suspect given the pressure of not being able to give away a penalty, the Sharks might just have gotten points in some form.

  • @Letgo (Comment 14) : there’s no point in arguing with the ref after he’s made a decision… really there isn’t.

It doesn’t matter how convincing your argument is, he’s not going to (or even allowed to) change his call.

It was stupid to try and run that ball. Should have taken the scrum and forced field position. That’s how you play in the wet.

  • I wonder if they’ll take Mienie along? Of course that would give Sean Everrit a bit of a headache as he’d have lost both his looseheads in the Sharks XV

  • Gee Whiz! The way some supporters are carrying on the Cheetahs played shit, and the ref was blind and blatantly robbed the Sharks!
FFS in all honesty, after Beast was injured, I doubt a scrum in the Sharks half would have been any advantage either. The law was clearly explained on R365. At the ref’s discretion an advantage either territorial or tactical is gained(key words ref and discretion), then he can call advantage over.

Please in all honesty, how many Sharks supporters would be here whining, had Step du Toit found Daniels, and had he then scored? I doubt any.

The Cheetahs didn’t play sparkling rugby. Sure they tried to run a few, but unlike the Sharks saw, that it wasn’t smart given the conditions. Sharks persisted with dumb rugby and paid the price!

Now there are some supporters that really give the Sharks a bad name with their rants. Neither side played well, the conditions saw to that. Cheetahs just capitalised on the numerous Sharks errors.
