Like Piet Lindeque before him, scrumhalf Tian Meyer has taken somewhat of a long and convoluted path between the Sharks junior ranks and the Super Rugby side, but appears to have almost reached his intended destination at last.
The former Westville pupil, who captained the Sharks at age group level, has been called up to join the tour party as an injury replacement for Cobus Reinach and should probably make his senior debut for the team against the Highlanders this weekend, if he gets off the bench. Meyer, who attended Werda Primary in Durban along with Anton Bresler, is a Sharks boy through and through, but took the decision to leave Durban after his under 21 year to join up with the Pumas. With the likes of Ruan Pienaar, Rory Kockott, Charl McLeod and Ross Cronje all ahead of him in the scrumhalf pecking order at the time, the decision to chase senior game time elsewhere made a lot of sense.
Meyer was asked to join the Sharks Super Rugby squad in 2011 as injury cover, but didn’t get as far as cracking a match day 22; his shot at Super Rugby had to wait until the following year where, as a loan player, he represented the Lions on 11 occasions, scoring two tries.
Meyer returned to Durban at the beginning of the 2013 season to play for College Rovers in the inaugural Community Cup and has also represented the SHarks XV, starting both of their most recent games at scrum half. He is currently 24 years old.

Talk about taking the scenic route in rugby
@CapeShark (Comment 1) : Witbank? Hardly scenic π
good luck to him hopefully he makes a good contribution and takes his chance with both hands like cooper,psdt,tera and cobus b4 him
@CapeShark (Comment 1) : scenic route maybe, but destination definatly not
@robdylan (Comment 2) : I believe my feelings on Witbank have been documented…
@Culling Song (Comment 5) : “asshole of south africa” if im not mistaken
I remember him from 2012 Lions, he was quite good. I look forward to seeing him in a Sharks jersey, hopes he gets a few minutes .. you know after we’ve sealed the game, having run away with the score, before the end of the game ! π
Wonderful to see, perseverance pays off!
@robdylan (Comment 2) : Yup, I did 3 years up on the plateau of Mordor, er I mean the Highveld. Never again
@CapeShark (Comment 9) : I have only one question….
WHY?
@robdylan (Comment 10) : hey Rob cause some people need to stay and work here on the plateau of Mordor as not everyone can live at the sea. If you stay long enough you’ll find that middle earth is a nice place to stay. π―
anxious to see who is going to play Vodacom cup in Meyer’s place when the other 2 leave with the Bokkies
@deirdrelu (Comment 12) : what about Ivan Ludick? He’s been on the scene for a while now. What’s his club form like?
