Eating humble pie

In South Africa we are a brutal bunch. Baying for blood at the first sign of weakness.

Last year this couldn’t have been more evident when the flyhalf debate raged last year. We all had our arguments as to why our favorites were to be given the starting ten berth, I myself was clamoring for Elton to be given his shot so he could show the world he was the chosen one.

All were in a agreement that Morne Steyn was one dimensional, a has been or even a never was. We wanted him dropped, exiled or drawn and quartered depending on what province you were from. He finally got a break during at the end of the year and at the end of the Rugby Championship.

This year he has quietly gone about his business. Again the top points scorer in the Super Fifteen. And as pretenders to his crown get injured or take a dip in form he is making me eat humble pie.

He has shown that firstly we play our stars into the ground and when they stop being super human out of utter exhaustion we discard them for the next big thing.

With the current crop of flyhalfs let’s hope the Morne forgives us and wins us the Rugby Championship this year.

  • I will admit that Morne has ben playing well this year but I still believe that Lambie is the front runner for the boks at this stage.

  • Bottom line is that it has only been Steyn and Lambie that has impressed in the flyhalf position this year and the only two that should be considered for the boks at this stage.

  • @Viking (Comment 4) : To be fair, I don’t think Lambie has impressed at all, but for his goal kicking. But yes the only two that should be considered.

@West Indies Cricket Board (Comment 2) : Don’t worry you will get more of him… he is deadly with the boot ;P

  • Morne has done well what Morne does. Kick.

He fits the Bok game plan well and will remain the incumbent. But I see nothing to rave about to be honest.

You think its cos Lambie is a poor distributor and Mornรฉ a good one? Really?

And how do we account for the “terrible service” Lambie must have been receiving from his scrumhalf?

  • @Uli (Comment 5) : I think that Morne has had better ball to work with. The bulls are giving him front foot ball and has a scrum half that delivers that ball accurately and quickly. But we will only really be able to tell after they have both played behind the same pack. IMO I believe that Lambie would be able to do more than Steyn given the same circumstances and team.

  • @Uli (Comment 17) : I think Lambie has done a lot, it just did not always result in a lot of tries. What I have been impressed with so far this season has been his decision making and cross kicks for the wings. We just need to do more with those opportunities. But it will be interesting to see which player Meyer is going to back and what the game plan is going to be.

  • rumblo, it is not a case of calling Morne a has been etc. I just don’t believe in playing an out of form player (think Spies and Habana in 2010/11). We could have won more trophies if we were willing to drop out of form players. Morne should never have played for the boks in 2012 but before then he was the outright first choice. Right now I would also select him with Lambie as cover.

  • @Uli (Comment 23) : Well I was expecting more from Jantjies this year. But with him being dropped as the kicker really makes it difficult for selection. I would then also rather go with someone like Demetri as a 3rd option at this stage. Meyer will have to select 3 flyhalves probably so it will be interesting to see who cracks the nod for the 3rd position.

  • @Uli (Comment 32) : Well Lambie has only had 3 real opportunities to start at 10 which was on the end of year tour last year. His performance against england was excellent and it was also the only game where we have kicked all our penalties for the year.

  • @Uli (Comment 35) : Agreed but none of the many flyhalves we tried last year set the world alight. Morne does have an impressive record for the boks but he has not done that justice in the last year. I just hope that whoever gets the nod makes a believer out of both of us.

  • Just to clarify I don’t like the current game plan. But since it isn’t going to change under HM I believe the best man to implement it is Morne. I also just wanted to highlight that a break when out of form is a hell of a lot better for the poor guys instead of beating a dead horse ( playing them into form ). I live in hope that Elton shows some kind of form behind the improving stormers pack.

  • @Uli (Comment 34) : But how can u compare Steyn’s record in a different team with a different coach, a team at the peak of their powers that contained legends of the gane, against what Lambie did in 3 tests. You can’t! Using that logic you have to compare Steyn in Meyer’s terrible 2012 vs Lambie in same. Lambie was better, no doubt about it. Steyn didn’t earn the 2011 flyhalf jersey either, he was terrible…

  • On current form in the teams they are playing for now. With the gameplan we know will be employed, who do you think is better suited? I would prefer lambie at Flyhalf, I would love to see Louw and Brussouw to start in tandem… But we know the brand of rugby that we will get so which of the two flyhalves are better suited to it. Also was pointing out we need player rotation to keep them fresh.

  • @rumblo (Comment 43) : That is a difficult question to answer, as we know the gameplan that Meyer is going to employ will most likely be the same one and will also be failed to be executed to the required standard once again. This is because it depends on talents like Matfield and Du Preez who have long since gone. If the gameplan is successfully executed its Steyn all the way in the high ball department ๐Ÿ™‚ Since we suspect it will fail you need a player who will try something different, and that player is without doubt Lambie. In his current form though, even that is doubtful, Lambie needs to rediscover his flair IMHO. I completely agree on playing Louw and Brussouw in tandem, its a no brainer!

  • I agree, Morne was shocking last year and should have worked out his form issues in CC and not while losing Springbok games for us. He is better this year. He is back to his own solid self. Our problem is that we want every single flyhalf, the SA rugby machine pops out, to be a Dan Carter or Wilkonson(of his day). We then get stuck with the Steyn’s and Lambie’s and moan to no end cause they lack attacking intuition and flair. They are both solid. They both can kick for poles and they are both at most times ‘one dimensional’. Goosen was great to watch – when not injured.

A bit of me also would rather see Demetri Catrakilis have a run. He is solid on defence, creates great ball for the backline and can slot the balls over the crossbar. We all know that would never happen though.
