Plenty of forwards, but backs in short supply

While it’s obviously great news for the Sharks that Willem Alberts has been deemed fit enough to join the tour group, one has to ponder the wisdom of sending over yet another loose forward (they now have six on tour) to take the place of the injured Frans Steyn.

To be fair to the coaches, to say that the Sharks’ backline ranks have been decimated by injury would be something of an understatement – you only need look at the fact that the lines of Piet Lindeque and Sean Robinson, who really were nowhere near team selection at the start of the season, are suddenly very much in the picture. The loss of Steyn, though, comes at a cruel time; he was finally starting to look like something after really battling for the opening two months of the competition. Furthermore, it leaves Plumtree with only two genuine centres in his squad.

What this means, of course, is yet another reshuffle, with Plumtree sure to ask JP Pietersen to perform a role in midfield while he ponders, yet again, a switch at wing. Whether he opts for the experience of Odwa Ndungane at right wing, or goes for a younger (and pacier) option in the form of S’bura Sithole, Lindeque or Robinson, remains to be seen, but those who know the coach would be wise to bet on the dreadlocked Ndungane being named for a 100th Super Rugby start against the Reds on Friday.

With Tera Mtembu still with the team, yet probably in doubt for Friday’s match, it’s a safe prediction that Willem Alberts will probably see some game time, although probably off the bench.

Sharks tour squad:
Forwards: Wiehahn Herbst, Jannie du Plessis, JC Janse van Rensburg, Danie Mienie, Kyle Cooper, Monde Hadebe, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Franco van der Merwe, Anton Bresler, Keegan Daniel, Marcell Coetzee, Derick Minnie, Jean Deysel, Willem Alberts, Tera Mtembu
Backs: Charl McLeod, Tian Meyer, Pat Lambie, Meyer Bosman, Piet Lindeque, JP Pietersen, Lwazi Mvovo, Odwa Ndungane, S’bura Sithole, Sean Robinson, Riaan Viljoen

  • think robinson will get nod.plum has selected him ahead of sithole so why go back now unless you really dont know what the hell is going on in your head.would like to see sithole though and hadebe gets some game time we dont wanna lose cooper to injury 2,also daniel needs to be benched but he wont so coetzea at 6,deysel at 7 and daniel at 8 alberts on the bench send minnie home hes a walking ruck penalty

  • Please play Lideque at outside center. The Reds use their wings really well, and they are going to run circles around Odwa. We need our two best wings on wing!

  • @PTAShark (Comment 2) : I agree with that and doubt Lindeque will struggle with his handling has much as he did last week again.

  • Plum won’t drop Keegan and I’m also not so sure that he will drop Marcell, so by that logic the trio will be.

    8. Keegan
    7. Alberts / Deysel
    6. Marcell

He hasn’t had any trouble playing Marcell at 6 at any point during this season, I can’t see why he would start now.

  • I also think Plum will move JP to center and use Odwa.

And he won’t have Anton starting and those are basically all the positions where there could be changes.

  • @Letgo (Comment 5) : The whole game is now about damage control. Unless the Reds really have an extremely poor day, I just don’t see the Sharks (depleted, demoralized, panicky coaching staff) beating them. The loss against the Highlanders means that we are pretty much out of the playoffs anyway – so a losing bonus point against the Reds does not matter anymore either. We are now purely playing for pride.

Plum should look at getting some young guys more exposure at this level – so please no Odwa. He is not the future of the Sharks.

I don’t think we’ll come back from this one either, but I still believe we will … if that makes any sense.

Mvovo to score a hatrick, Lambie one and just because I’ve been giving him slack Keegan to score two in his 20 minutes on the park… Sharks by 18. 😀
