Former Bok coach Nick Mallett will take charge of an interesting South African Barbarians squad, as they play against English club side Saracens in London this coming Thursday. A fair few of the squad have played for the Sharks, as the bulk is made up of South African players based in Europe.

Perhaps the most surprising selection is that of young Sharks and Pretoria Boys High prop Simon Kerrod, who was a stand-out for Rovers in the Community Cup and recently made his Sharks XV debut in the Vodacom Cup. Still eligible for under 21 rugby, Kerrod can play on either side of the scrum and appears a bright prospect. He’ll be joined by another young man who has come through the Sharks junior ranks at prop, Griquas’ Nick Schonert. After surprisingly missing out on a senior contract in Durban earlier this year, Baby Bok Schonert has gone on to do great things for Shimlas and Griquas in the Varsity and Vodacom Cups respectively.

Hooker Shaun Malton, currently playing for Nottingham in the UK, is a former Sharks under 21 captain, with another ex-Shark, Jacques-Louis Potgieter, also in the mix. Doppies le Grange, Ethienne Reynecke, Bees Roux and Gerrit-Jan van Velze complete the complement of players boasting Super Rugby experience.

  • The selection of Bees Roux is a joke. He should not be part of any squad.

  • Hopefully it gets him into the Sharks frame of mind so he can come in and right the listing and almost sinking ship that is the Sharks! Plum isn’t doing a thing

  • Just hope they’re not as useless as the Sharks, but then again Plum is not they’re coach so they should be better.
