Deon Fourie starts at flank for the Stormers against the Rebels this weekend, as Allister Coetzee has been forced to name a loose trio missing a traditional big ball-carrier.

Injuries to both Duane Vermeulen and Rynhardt Esltadt have left the Stormers short of options, meaning a start for Fourie at 6, with Siya Kolisi (7) and Nizaam Carr (8) completing the trio. Further forward changes see Skarra Ntubeni start at hooker and Pat Cilliers come in at tighthead prop.

At the back, Elton Jantjies makes his return to the starting flyhalf berth at the expense of Gary van Aswegen, while a change at scrumhalf sees Louis Schreduer start as his halfback partner.

Stormers: 15. Joe Pietersen, 14. Gio Aplon, 13. Juan de Jongh, 12. Jean de Villiers (captain), 11. Bryan Habana, 10. Elton Jantjies, 9. Louis Schreuder, 8. Nizaam Carr, 7. Siya Kolisi, 6. Deon Fourie, 5. Andries Bekker, 4. Eben Etzebeth, 3. Pat Cilliers, 2. Scarra Ntubeni, 1. Steven Kitshoff

Substitutes: 16. Martin Bezuidenhout, 17. Frans Malherbe, 18. Gerbrandt Grobler, 19. Don Armand, 20. Nic Groom, 21. Gary van Aswegen, 22. Gerhard van den Heever

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 2) : He is actually a very useful openside – not in Brussow and Flo’s class – but still very good. And I praise him while vomiting in my mouth, because he must be my least favourite rugby player, where the list of least favourites include a couple of Aussies and Poms.

  • Coetzee’s comments on the release of the new look side was he was hoping this would inject some fire or some such wording into the team.
The team is fine Alister. It’s the coach that needs shuffling.

Excited to see Nizaam Carr at 8, he’s very good at 8

Boohoo, a slightly sub-standard SuperRugby year, with loads of injuries and a few unfortunate near-misses. Pffft.

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 12) : oh please, you don’t measure a coach by Currie Cup standards. Likewise the Stormers will always be bridemaids in the greater scheme of things unless AC can adopt a balanced approach instead of this defence orientated crap he dishes out every week. The Kings in the debut season have got 2 bonus point tries. The Stormers have 1 in 26 games and you expect me to believe it’s not a coaching problem with the kind of players he has, Juan de Jongh, Joe Pietersen, Bryan Habana, Gio Aplon etc

Dude, if you believe all that counts is tries, then maybe go watch basketball.
Maybe try to reference other performance criteria?

I believe what’s on the scoreboard and I also believe a coach isnt just for Christmas.

I certainly dont believe AC should be fired because the Stormers arent goign to make the play-offs this year. Certainly not given the injuries we’ve had this year.
You talk about Habana, Aplon etc – those guys have spent most of the season on the sidelines, along with the Incredible Schalk and Ysterbeth.

Sorry mate – Im just nto as fickle as you are. AC is a damned coach and Id have been very happy if he made the Bok grade ahead of HM.

Anyway, who the hell would you replace him with?

For the record – time and time and time again, defence has won out in the long run. Its the rock on which good rugby is built. Its not pretty, but its successful, time and again.

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 15) : Look I never said AC was a bad coach, but with the attacking weapons at his disposal, he should be scoring bonus point in atleast half of his games, the mere fact that that doesn’t happen points to a coaching problem, of which I believe AC is responsible. The Stormers attacking is diabolical, all they know is defence. Excuses are getting a bit old too, your injury list is not nearly as bad as the Sharks, apart from losing some grunt up front, there hasn’t been a terrible run of injuries

For what it’s worth I think John Dobson could do a good job, but maybe we 1st have to see him at Currie Cup level

  • @Ludz (Comment 16) :

I appreciate that Ludz, but this season we’ve had an injured flyhalf (Jantjies), injured wingers (Habana and Aplon) and injured centre (de Jongh).
Those are the attacking weapons – if they’re not on the field because of injury, is that now the coach’s fault?

Add to this the (enormous) blow that losing Etsebeth and Burger was and you’d find yourself in a pcikle as coach, irrespective of the depth.

Add to this the fact that we have a Jean “no pass” de Villiers at inside centre; how do you expect the Stormers to score bucketloads of tries?
This self-same de Villiers that week in, week out makes the team of the week on this very site?

So before we get into this, I’d ask that you provide statistics as to how many games each of de Jongh, Aplon, Habana and Jantjies ahve actually played in this season.
Then we can have a reasoned debate as to the attacking proficiency of the best defensive team in the league.

Anyway, it’s not that am basing my scrutiny purely on this season

    So, dude, I’m confused.

If you’re not only looking at this season, which season exactly are you looking at?

2012 Perhaps? The same 2012 where the Stormers topped the SuperRugby table and then narrowly lost to the Sharks in the semis. And then went on to win the Currie Cup?

Or perhaps you’re referring to 2011, when the Stormers came second on the log and again (unfortunately) lost in the semi to the Saders?

Or perhaps you are going back to 2010, when the Stormers came second on the log and lost in the final to the Bulls?

Oh right, youre going back to 2009; when it was Rassie who was the coach.

I think its safe to say you talking out of your ass about Coetzee and you ARE indeed basing your opinion of Coetzee on this season alone.

But I suppose – why ruin a good story with facts.

For the record – the season before Coetzee took over – the Stormers came 10th. In his first season he came 2nd and followed that up with a 2nd and a 1st in the seasons following that.

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 7) : Several dimensions better than Plum is hardly complimentary. He’s in the same field – they’ve reached their ceiling. Both teams are bursting with top players and exciting talent. Injuries aside – all the S15 teams get injuries – it’s how you take what you have and win.

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 28) : tell me though why is it that you always fall at the last hurdle, say what you will about me talking out of my ass, but AC fails to win trophies because of his defence orientated rubbish, until they bring a coach that will unleash the attacking potential in the Stormers. You will merely settle for being the bridemaids every season. Come on now, conference trophies count for nothing, you’re as good as the Highlanders if you don’t win the trophy, always failing in the play-offs

Your lot are goign in the opposite direction.

And yes, you have your head if you think 10th spot to 2nd is not a great achievement.
