The Stormers have been found guilty of match-day misconduct and fined a whopping twenty-five thousand Australian dollars.

The SANZAR release on the finding follows:

“A SANZAR Judicial Hearing conducted by Mr Terry Willis (Australia) has found the Stormers Team guilty of Misconduct under the SANZAR Code of Conduct following charges of insulting and offensive conduct towards Match Officials during the Stormers vs Hurricanes match on 26 April 2013.

The Stormers Team has been found to have brought the game into disrepute and breached Section 8.3 of the SANZAR Code of Conduct:
a) All persons must ensure the game is played and conducted in accordance with disciplined and sporting behaviour and acknowledge that it is not sufficient to reply solely upon the Match Officials to maintain those principles;
l) All persons shall not use crude or abusive language or gestures towards referees, assistant referees, Match Officials or spectators.

The Stormers Team has admitted its behaviour and accepted, that insulting and offensive conduct towards match officials was a breach of the SANZAR Code of Conduct and has no place in rugby and has unreservedly apologised to the Match Officials and Mr Sheldon Eden-Whaitiri in particular.

The Stormers Team have been fined the maximum financial penalty of A$15,000 for the insulting and offensive conduct towards Match Officials and A$10,000 for bringing the game into disrepute and also ordered to pay SANZAR’s costs.

The hearing resumed on Wednesday following extended adjournments to allow the Stormers Team to seek independent legal advice in the interests of fairness to all parties.

The Judicial Officer directed SANZAR and the Stormers Team, save for the SANZAR Chief Executive Officer responding to the media in terms consistent with the media release, no person involved in the proceedings will make any further comment in respect of this matter.”

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Obviously not enough confusion to plead not guilty. 😈

  • Wasnt this related to that veeery dodgy line-out call in the last couple of minutes of the game where the Stormers were robbed?
I seem to remember Glen Jackson being the referee?

  • I think they abused a linesman in the first game of the tour.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 6) :

Not a fan of any backchat by any stretch of the imgaination, but if memory serves it was a ludicrous and blatantly wrong decision on the linesman’s part.

Dont know if its the same incident referred to in the arti though.

  • @DaveB (Comment 10) : Especially when they are neck and neck with the Sharks, thus my suggestion of the docking. 😈

  • And just to put this fine into perspective, yesterday J Arthur Brown, who has been accused of “financial mismanagement” of up to R400 000 000 walked out of court a free man after being sentenced to a fine of R150 000.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 11) : Would love that. I am involved with the Sharks Supporters Club in CT and it is quite a nightmare supporting the Sharks down here. Some of the banter far exceeds the extreem. Just hope we can claw back thed 1 point defesit tomorrow.

  • @DaveB (Comment 13) : I dont like being below the Stormers on the log, but my suggestion of docking the point was really tongue in cheek – it would have been very unfair to do that for something that one of the support staff had said on the side of the field.

I just somehow wish that refs and linesmen and even the TMO video jockeys could be held more accountable.
