Overdue honour for Oddy

The unfortunate circumstances under which Sharks wing Odwa Ndungane earned his 100th Super Rugby cap last week will be made up for tomorrow, as the veteran winger leads the team out to celebrate his 101st career cap in the flagship Southern Hemisphere competition.

Ndungane, who represented the Bulls on 10 occasions in the then Super 12 as a raw youngster in 2004, accumulated 89 caps for the Sharks in the various incarnations of Super Rugby that followed between 2005 and 2013 (scoring 22 tries in the process). In coming on late against the Reds last week, he earned his 100th, but it was hardly much of a celebration, given the result or the short stint afforded him. Coach John Plumtree has restored Odwa to the number 14 jersey this week and it’s only fitting that we mark his achievements in (and loyalty to) the Sharks jersey over the better part of a decade.

The balance of the team is an experienced one as well, with Jannie du Plessis and Meyer Bosman both centurions themselves, with JP Pietersen (97th cap) and Keegan Daniel (92nd) well one their way to joining the club. JC Janse van Rensburg, Franco van der Merwe, Willem Alberts, Charl McLeod and Jean Deysel all weigh in with 50 caps or more, the latter two having achieved their own half centuries against the Reds last week.

The team boasts a combined total of 1103 caps, an average of 50.13 per player.

  • @John Galt (Comment 6) : that’s a real chop thing to say on a thread celebrating a major milestone for the guy. It’s like someone sending you a birthday card saying “I hope you die soon, you prick”.

What’s your address and when’s your birthday?
