Sharks finally break their duck

The Sharks have prevailed against the Western force by 23 points to 13, in a scrappy game in Perth.

The Durbanites again started slowly, with the home side enjoying all the possession and territory for most of the opening period. Dogged defence, though, coupled with some poor execution from the Force, saw most of the possession squandered; the Sharks were good value for the little ball they did see in the half, with Keegan Daniel scoring a good try after a strong multi-phase build-up. That score was soon eclipsed, though, as Force center Kyle Godwin scored an eqauliser shortly afterwards. The home side led by 10 points to 7 at half-time, with the game evenly poised.

The second half belonged to the Sharks, though, as the likes of Marcell Coetzee, Pieter-Steph du Toit and Kyle Cooper turned the physical contest their way. The majority of play remained scrappy, with many errors, but a wonderful individual try from Riaan Viljoen broke the deadlock, with Pat Lambie’s boot doing the rest to ensure a win that will do wonders for team morale as they head back to South Africa.

Western Force (13) – Try: Kyle Godwin. Conversion: Jayden Hayward. Penalty: Hayward.
Sharks (23) – Tries: Keegan Daniel, Riaan Viljoen. Conversions: Pat Lambie (2). Penalties: Lambie(3).

  • I called them to lose, so I’m glad I was proven wrong.
But the game was way too scrappy and the Force had their moments to win it.

Maybe plum should have called the season dead a long time a go. Looked what happened to the thas after their coach called their season over. Or that journalist should have puked earlier.

  • Normally when I support a team I am happy or disappointed but after a sharks game I’m as tired as hell. The sharks must be only team that can do that to you.

  • Okay guys on a serious note,
I hope this lucky break doesn`t change your view on Plumtree.

Yes we finally got a result against the lowly force. Last year we would`ve bemoaned the fact that we didn`t get a bonus point within 20 minutes.

We`re still backs to the wall here . . .

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 14) : No no, we didn’t win because of Plumtree, we won in spite of Plumtree.

He threw in the towel, gave up, probably didn’t even enter the change room at half time, probably also had the Force up for a bonus point win. 😈

Nope, it’s only once he’s out of the picture that the players are finally willing to play rugby, as apposed to doing everything in their power not to lose.

  • I honestly wasn’t all that impressed with the Sharks. I thought we could and should have dominated that game. I am glad we finally won though. Hopefully Bissies return will happen this coming week! I think the fact that we didn’t get the bonus point may have knocked us out of the running for good.

    1. van Rensburg – Played much better this week. He contributed well.
    2. Cooper – He was always there to do what he needed to. He wasn’t always effective, but was a stand-out nonetheless.
    3. du Plessis – I think the competition from Herbst has done him a world of good. He is playing well and is a leader for the entire team.
    4. Bresler – Tackled endlessly and justified his starting spot (ahead of Franco, not Piet). He played well.
    5. van der Merwe – The line-out operated well but this is all that justifies this guy being in the team (His defense is alright).
    6. Coetzee – Had one of his best games this season. It seems he has learned how to carry a ball forwards. He more or less proved his value.
    7. Alberts – Welcome back! He showed good carries and also passed when he needed to. He is not at his best, but he is getting there very quickly.
    8. Daniel – Good as a player (not many mistakes), bad as a leader. He made some poor decisions as captain. With 15 minutes to go, we were in the lead and a bonus point looked possible. We needed it and he should have gone for it. I reckon he, like Plum, has given up on the season and just wants to win.
    9. McLeod – He wasn’t fantastic but was composed. Decent game.
    10. Lambie – He distributed very well. I would have liked to see more runs.
    11. Mvovo – The Force didn’t allow him much room but he showed dedication and value.
    12. Bosman – Had a relatively quiet match. He was good at keeping the backline moving though.
    13. Pietersen – He showed some nice touches but he really belongs on the wing. The quality of his defense drops dramatically when in the 13 jersey.
    14. Ndungane – I think he ran twice. He kicked almost every time he got the ball, and it didn’t work. Poor match from Odwa.
    15. Viljoen – Had an awesome second half. He managed to get into his running which was great to see. Great player!

    16. Hadebe – N/A
    17. Herbst – I wish there were a position for both him and Jannie because he is so valuable.
    18. du Toit – He probably should have started. He was good when he came on. He won’t be great though unless we play him consistently.
    19. Deysel – N/A
    20. Mtembu – He should have played at 8 when he came on with Daniel at 6 and Coetzee at 7. That didn’t happen though. He was good though. He has a bright future.
    21. N/A (Give the guy a bloody chance)
    22. Lindeque – A good replacement to have. He didn’t get much of a chance to get into the match but was always busy and shows promise.

The problem I guess was that we could not get going as much as was needed to dominate as much as we could have. We will have to be a lot better against the Bulls.

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 14) : Can you imagine the pressures Alister Coetzee must be getting from his supporters …… perhaps do a swop. Let them take plum and the Sharks take Alister and hen we sit and watch boring defensive rugby for the rest of our lives.

  • Next we welcome the Bulls to the Tank..if we get 4 points and then we have a bye abd suddenly we are still in the running especially if we can get 4 points at Loftus also. Remember we still play hosts to the Blues and Kings. 8/9 point turnaround against bulls and things get pretty interesting. Remember Bulls still have to play Cheaters in Bloem and Streamers in Cpt. While the Cheaters have the Reds and Blues also at home. Interesting weeks to follow.

Against the Bulls we will need him dearly…Coetzee and Daniel have been poor all season, slightly better on Friday but nothing special
