Unexpected Beast boost for Sharks

There’s been a bit of a silver lining to the Sharks’ latest injury cloud, with the news that Beast Mtawarira will be fit for selection this weekend.

While it’s already been confirmed that Bismarck du Plessis and Butch James will return to the selection equation this week, it was initially thought that the big Bok prop would require at least another week, meaning no action until the Blues game after the upcoming month-long break. Mtawarira, though, is fit and along with Meyer Bosman (cleared to play after a nasal injury) will ensure that coach John Plumtree has more than enough men to pick from this week.

In fact, the only area of real weakness remains outside centre, with Piet Lindeque emerging as the clear favourite to start in the number 13 jersey.

A possible line-up to face the Bulls could thus look as follows:

15 Viljoen, 14 Ndungane, 13 Lindeque, 12 Bosman, 11 Mvovo, 10 Lambie, 9 McLeod, 8 Daniel, 7 Alberts, 6 Coetzee, 5 van der Merwe, 4 du Toit, 3 J du Plessis, 2 Cooper, 1 Mtawarira
Subs: 16 B du Plessis, 17 Herbst, 18 Bresler, 19 Deysel/Mtembu, 20 Meyer, 21 James, 22 Sithole

  • That’s a sad backline… 😥
    Decent scrum though.

  • I reckon Plum will stick with a 5-2 split. Hopefully he will reconsider Kankowski in the number 20 jersey with Deysel in 19 (no sense having 2 8s in Kanko and Tera on the bench).

  • Therefore having just Meyer and James as backs cover, which to be honest should be enough.

  • @David12246 (Comment 4) : and which of those two comes on if we lose a wing/fullback 5 minutes into the game?

Jannie du Plessis was quoted as saying the believe they are still in the race for top 6.
Well thats not too far of if we take 4 points this weekend and a bye following that.

  • @robdylan (Comment 5) : It would be a bit of a reshuffle but this backline:

    9. McLeod
    10. Lambie
    11. Mvovo
    12. Bosman
    13. Lindeque
    14. Ndungane
    15. Viljoen

…could become (given an injury to Ndungane for arguments sake):

    9. McLeod/Meyer
    10. Bosman/James
    11. Mvovo
    12. James/Bosman
    13. Lindeque
    14. Viljoen
    15. Lambie

    …or alternatively (although unlikely):

    9. McLeod/Meyer
    10. Lambie
    11. Mvovo
    12. Bosman
    13. James
    14. Lindeque
    15. Viljoen

…OR you could go ahead and throw Daniel on the wing. He plays a lot of the game there anyway…

  • @robdylan (Comment 13) : Not saying he will play but he should.

@DBOY (Comment 10) : We need 5 points in every game if we want to make the play-offs (realistically).

  • Can’t see Bismarck having much impact after his long lay off, he’ll need match fitness, confidence after his injury, confidence in the game plan (what game plan 🙄 ), ball skill under pressure, the list goes on and on….

Naah, I won’t be getting my hopes up too much. Bismarck making it for some 10 – 15mins. without injury is as much as we can hope for, for now.

  • fisher at no 13 would be a better bet. he knows serfontein and has played with him before. give him the opportunity. he has taken a back seat to joubert in the vodacom cup but to have robinson and lindeque ahead of him now is enough of a slap in the face.
