Bulls lose Pottie for good (and maybe Chilli too)

News out of Pretoria this morning (it seems our friends at Beeld actually do have a clue what goes on in that city) is that Bulls and Bok loose forward Jacques Potgieter will not be returning to play Super Rugby there after his up-coming stint in Japan.

Conceding that he has fallen out of favour with coach Frans Ludeke, and that more game time is paramount, Potgieter has requested (and been granted) a release from his Bulls contract and will head to the UK to join an as-yet unknown English club at the end of the Japanese season.

Meanwhile, Brenden Nel, writing for SuperSport, reports that hooker Chiliboy Ralepelle, understandably also frustrated with his lack of opportunity at Bok level, is being courted by both Toulouse and Toulon in France, with a massive offer from each club currently on the table. As Nel reported some weeks ago, budgetary issues in Pretoria, caused in no small part by the Bulls’ insistence on contracting at least three junior players in each position every year, are making it harder for new HP Manager Xander Janse van Rensburg to balance the books, resulting in difficulties when it comes to retaining players of Ralepelle’s calibre.

Ag shame, we all sigh in unison!

  • Chilli has been screwed around for far to long by the Bulls and SA rugby. I hope he goes and makes a packet in France. Damn good player, underused and abused by the Bulls.

  • @PTAShark (Comment 1) : yip. But why doesn’t this affect them during Super Rugby??? Mentally they are tough, why? because they have a coach to accommodate that role in the modern era… Not like another team I know that doesn’t have a similar thing in place to get over that mental hurdle/block when and if required.

  • Chilliboy is one of my favourite non-Sharks players. Hope he stays.

  • I’ve always rated Jacques as a good player. Bulls losing a good flank there!

  • @RedSharkUtd82 (Comment 5) : You can’t be serious, the most overrated bok in recent memory!

  • @neilster (Comment 6) : Overrated in your opinion maybe. Anyway that award STILL belongs to Ashwin Willemse!!!! 😉

  • @RedSharkUtd82 (Comment 7) : haha, there goes your credibility…as Ashmin got player of the year in 2003.
Potgieter never deserved to be a bok, he had done nothing except be a bull!

  • @neilster (Comment 8) : He’s a hard runner and big hitter. His problem is that there are much harder runners and bigger hitters available for SA. Good idea for him to move on.

  • @PTAShark (Comment 1) : It all started with Jake White though… Well, the Toulon hooker was 38 years, 8 months and some days when he recently became the oldest Heyneken Cup winner. They probably need someone a bit younger. Plus with Danie and Bakkies playing for Toulon, it would be like adding the final piece of the puzzle.

  • @neilster (Comment 8) : Relax boet that is MY opinion and I never said it’s the ONLY opinion. I don’t rate him like you don’t rate Potgieter – that’s all 😉
Being player of the year in 2003 just tells you how bad Sa rugby was that year – it’s not as if he broke numerous records. How many Springbok tries did this awesome wing score for the Bokke, not even 10 at most? Moving along…

  • @RedSharkUtd82 (Comment 11) : I am relaxed china, all in the name of a bit of banter!

By the way I never called him an awesome winger, but he definitely wasn’t the worst thats for sure.

  • @PTAShark (Comment 9) : Exactly. Certainly doesn’t lack for any effort but his numbers never justified the hype ie tackles made and metres gained. Good luck to him.

  • @RedSharkUtd82 (Comment 11) : Ashwin Willemse – 19 tests, 4 tries.
1 against NZ at Loftus in our 16-52 drubbing in 2003.
1 against Samoa at Suncorp Stadium at the 2003 World Cup.
1 against England where we crushed them 58-10 at Freestate Stadium in Bloemfontein in 2007.
1 against Namibia at Newlands in 2007.
