The KZN team to compete at this year’s Craven Week tournament has been named, with the sons of former Sharks players featuring prominently. Glenwood is the best-represented team in the selection, with 9 boys from the “Green Machine” selected to wear the black and white.
Kearsney twins Daniel and Jean-Luc du Preez will form the mainstay of the pack, in their third year in the side. Their father Robert is, of course, a former Sharks and Springbok scrumhalf and is currently head coach of KZN club champions, College Rovers. The du Preez twins played for SA Schools last year and will be joining the Sharks academy in 2014; their older brother, flyhalf Rob, is a part of this year’s SA Under 20 side. Four other representatives from the Botha’s Hill school have made the grade, with another famous son, scrumhalf Matthew Reece-Edwards, among them. His father Hugh is a former Natal and Springboks fullback and current assistant coach of the Sharks.
Maritzburg College (4), Westville (2) and DHS (1) make up the bulk of the side.

Cheers Rob. Well done to all the boys who will be representing the Kingdom of KZN at Craven Week. First up they play the Blue Bulls who have some tall timber at lock – Affies giant, RG Snyman at 2.03m, 2012 SA Schools rep Abongile Nontkontwane from St. Albans and Hyron Andrews from the Garsfontein
In other schoolboy news College host Glenwood tomorrow on Reunion Day. I hope the grasshopper plague can be dealt with!
where is it being held this year?
@Poisy (Comment 3) : Polokwane at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, home of the Limpopo Blue Bulls
@slammerboy (Comment 2) : not a chance! green and white all the way. on a side note kearsney have looked brilliant this year
@slammerboy (Comment 4) : aka whipping boys of vodacom cup
@Poisy (Comment 5) : RED BLACK WHITE!! Glenwoods High Performance Rugby Program has had another successful year and will likely have bragging rights in KZN in 2013.
anyone know if Mazamo Majola is related to Khaya?
@robdylan (Comment 8) : yes, turns out Khaya knows… no relation.
@slammerboy (Comment 7) : think kearsney will do better than glenwood and it pains me to say that
can you just imagine the hilarity if this Marcel Coetzee lad goes on to play for the Sharks… 🙂
@slammerboy (Comment 4) : When is this happening? Would love to go watch a match or 2
Kearsney will wipe the floor with Glenwood …
Once again the natal craven week selections continue to be a farce.
Not one Hilton Boy ? Not on House boy? Aren’t they on equal standings with Glenwood? The same administrators that lets Marcel Coetzee slip under the radar? Please enlighten me on the make up of the selectors this year ,as I understand it was Kearsney dominant last year or the year before?
@Talent (Comment 13) : glenwood has dominated the last few years and as a result they have had more representatives than the other schools but this year kearsney is head and shoulders better than any other kzn team would have thought the craven week selections would reflect that but no.
@Talent (Comment 13) : glenwood has dominated the last few years and as a result they have had more representatives than the other schools but this year kearsney is head and shoulders better than any other kzn team would have thought the craven week selections would reflect that but no. as for hilton amd michealhouse they useless this year sorry
@Poisy (Comment 14) : I think its because alot of Glenwoods players are from the development initiatives ,they invest so much into them that its hard not to reward them, maybe just a guess
@Poisy (Comment 14) : Havent really dominated since the arrival of the Du Preezs 😆
Colleges 150th reunion, I wouldn’t write them off
@slammerboy (Comment 2) : Kearsney only beat G/wood by one Or two points the last time they played at Kearsney, so not a whipping at all..
Can’t believe Kwa-Dukuza High School doesn’t have ONE guy in the squad. 😥
@rhineshark (Comment 20) : sorry, my mistake. DHS should’ve read KDHS
@robdylan (Comment 21) : Or as we used to call it back in the day: St. Anger.
Hey don’t bash St Anger we once had a Craven week representative back in the 80’s Tubby Gerber, played hooker and kicked for poles. I wonder how many hookers managed that, not John Smit.
Just for information in the latest Rugby365 rankings 14 – Westville, 19 – Glenwood and Kearsney “strongly considered” for the top 20.
@markp (Comment 23) : Strongly considered :meaning its subjective .Rugby15 has them at 14 ,the only KZN school in the top 30…
It was unfortunate that the match between Kearsney & Westville was rained out 2 weeks ago and Glenwood and Westville are still having handbag squabbles. The games against College will help to get some idea but it would be some great match ups. I think Kearsney is probably tops but Westville have come on a great deal since the start of the season.
@markp (Comment 23) : Dude, he wasn’t the only one. We also had a SA schools wing called Greg Lambert and the van Rooyen brothers at centre (a few years apart).
You a SHS old boy? If so, what year? I was 1984.
